Cough Drops

They were writing business letters in Mears high school and every period and comma must be in its proper place . Principal Ray Price stopped at Lorena Pearson's desk and said : " Isn't that comma out of place ? " " No , " said Lorena , " there isn't any comma there . " So they talked forth and back a while , Mr. Price maintaining there was a mis- placed comma there and Lorena saying there was no comma there at all . Fnally he started erasing and erasing and nothing came away and then he turned the paper over and found there was only a flaw in the paper .-- Card of thanks . In sincere appreciation of the flowers and the kindness shown us in the loss of our dear mother we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who helped us in the hour of sorrow . Earl Gasahl , Evard Gasahl , Mr. and Mrs. Bernhard Schettenhelm . - Little Arthur Peterson fell through the ice on a shallow pond back of the Mears school and got wet Wednesday morning . Several of the At- chinson family , who came to Mears to attend the services for Mrs. Ruth Forbear , were in their car when it overturned on Elmer Wolf's corner a mile and a half out of Mears . - Saturday night Mears high school will have a skating party at Morris Lake and eat buns and cof- fee and frankfurts by a bonfire on the shore . Be sure to take along a clothesline to pull the skates out and a butterfly net to get the chil- dren out . - Clare , now you wouldn't really drink beer with a woman and her pal for an hour and a half and keep kissing her when her pal stepped out of the room and then after her pal had paid for all the beer you wanted to drink , you wouldn't run them both over to jail , would you ? That was hardly the socially correct thing to do . And if

you thought they were drinking too much beer , why didn't you tell them so an hour or so before instead of keeping on drinking and play- ing with them ? -Suffering botany , look who's here . Mrs. Arbutus Plant came up from Muskegon to visit George Rodway . I wonder if she wore a trailing gown ? -The tenant house on the Elmer Krantz farm burned to the ground Tuesday morning . It was occupied by the Frank Beggs family . -Hey there ! hay here ! Hay , straw , seeds , feeds and Stearns Golden Eagle coal for sale at the Purdy warehouse in Hart by Phil F. Bailey , phone . He buys potatoes , adv . Dr. Vincent M. Amstutz , Shelby's live - wire chiropractor , has returned from several weeks in Texas where he was taking a post graduate course at the Marlowe Chiropractic College . His office if over Edgar Johnson's store . - Bill Anderson , Sr. , goes now to Wisconsin for a few winter weeks . -Snow is falling now to delight little boys who want to try out their Christmas skis . - The sheriff's office did not send Clare Dem- mon over to the tap room nor did Mrs. Stevens call for any assistance . Clare entered the room and proceeded to enjoy himself . He edged over to the table occupied by Harry F. Snyder and his secretary , Gertrude Moran . Clare would like to get acquainted with the girl , and after a while he got to drinking with them . Whether he was with them an hour and a half or two hours and a half or three hours , at any rate he accepted Mr. Snyder's hospitality . Mr. Snyder had a good sized roll and says he paid for a number of drinks for Clare Demmon . In pay- ing his bill the salesman pulled out a small empty automatic along with his purse . He had no shells whatever and says he never had shot it off . Perhaps down in Ohio there might not be any law requiring pistols to be registered . He didn't know there was here . The pistol was empty and he had no shells and he meant no harm . He got a $ 100 fine and 30 days . But what I marvel at is that Clare , after drinking and playing with the girl for perhaps a couple of hours , would take to jail , too . Up to that time what had she done ? After being locked up in an upper room in the jail she became hysterical and broke a win- dow . They let her out and she went over to the hotel lobby and istered as " Mrs. Nutts . " At that time she was a little excited and talked a lot about " this small town stuff . " But can you blame her after being locked up ? You might feel the same way yourself . If Clare Dem- man had stayed away from their table , if he had not been drinking with them . if he had not got friendly with the lady secretary and aroused Mr. Snyder's resentment , the world would have gone peacefully on its way . We attach no blame or fault in this matter to Sheriff Frank Burmeister nor to his undersheriff , Tom Reid . They received no telephone calls and issued no instructions for anyone to be sent over to the tavern . Mrs. Stevens asked for no assistance . We count them out of it . Clare Demmon mixed into the affair , drank and made merry and made a mess of it to the great financial sorrow of his pals who trusted him . If he had not led them into trouble , would there have been any trouble ? Anyway , don't kiss a girl and then take her to jail .

For a number of years they made their home in Mears . Then the family removed to Detroit wrere Mr. Gasahl was employed for a number of years . When she went away last autumn as usual , little did her Mears friends realize they might never see her again alive , although sometimes in speaking of her health she would tell them : " I am worse off than you think At her daughter's home in Dearborn she was up and around until about two weeks before the end . During her last few days she was re- moved to the Detroit Osteopathic hospital in Highland Park where an operation disclosed the presence of cancer . She passed away Tuesday morning , January 19. So passes from this community a good neighbor , a woman with a sterling sense of justice . Without a shadow of affec- tation she was not afraid to call a spade a spade .
