Tennis Racquets

A health officer is supposed to guard the sanitary safety of the parish , so the other day when Burrell Read took his 11 year old daugh- ter Carma , all broken out with chicken pox , down to the public swim- ming pool at the lake , he went over and instructed the Tills to keep little Patty Lou away from Carma on account of Carma having the chicken pox . Now wasn't that kind and thoughtful of Burrell ? It would have shown much more sanitary intelligence if her had kept his young daughter at home , or if she must travel around , at least out of the public swimming pool . Wouldn't it not be more sensible to let healthy - skinned children like Patty Lou use the publie swimming pool and have Carma do her swimming in a galvanized tub in the woodshed until such time as her spots dropped off ? Well , well , what health of- ficers we do have sometimes , tacking up quarantine cards on other people's houses at $ 2 a card or whatever it is , and then letting loose a million chicken pox germs at the public swimming pool . Of course , maybe Burrell had an eye for business . Maybe he hoped to have Car- ma sow the seed so he could tack up a thousand quarantine cards at $ 2 a card or whatever it is . The state board of health ought to meet- in solemn conclave and benevolently bestow an honorary degree on Burrell Read in recognition of his extremely meritorious services in behalf of the public health of the Golden nation . - Once a year the Mears school board meets to measure up the civic stature of its mem- bers . The law requires the proceedings of the annual meeting to be published in a newspaper at district expense . About $ 7 it cost last

year , but for a number of years the Mears school board has had this report printed in an out of town paper instead of the local paper where it belongs . As we would occasionally remark in these broad fearless columns , such official transgressions of the public decency might have their own peculiar promptings , and whenever a board of education had facts and figures they wanted to conceal from the local taxpayers it might be well to get the annual board of education report printed in an out of town paper so that the home folks would know as little as possible about what is going on . This year , however , we had reason- able grounds for expecting better things , as we have two very intelli- gent women who were elected to the school board last year . They did their part and voted to have the annual report printed in the home town paper , but Otto Carlson , Ben Fuller and Burrell Read voted to have the report published in an outside paper . Mears is perhaps the only village in Michigan where the school board would do such a thing . If you know of any other school board in Michigan where the school board is so heathenish as to take the annual school report away from the home town paper and print it in an out of town paper , send full particulars in a plain stamped envelope and we will send you 25c coin or stamps . Otto Carlson is put in by a certain clique because he is a yes - yes man . Similar testimonial compliments could be handed to Ben Fuller . And Burrell Read makes almost as good a school board member as he does a health officer . Progress Cleanser is a fine wash- ing powder and cleanser sold for 10c a package at the Ideal Sales Co ..
