So this is the birthday of The Mears Newz , and how shall we spend it ? Twenty - six years ago the little paper was born in Wright's feed mill . Well , we know how we would like to spend the day ; a row boat on The Golden River , a dozen cheese sandwiches and a jug of cold buttermilk and dictionary or a catalog of postal scales and office sup- plies to look at . And then a walk through the Whitney woods to the eagle's mesa and the far south oasis where the purplish pink flowers grow in the lowlands . And are they water hemlock or aren't they ? And then maybe spread a little linseed oil on the 1928 cabin in the woods . But it will be otherwise . The watch by the gutter for a few coins , the gathering up of a few news notes to put in an envelope , the seeing of the last advertiser , a hurrying walk along the sidewalk to write what people are doing in their back yards or front porches , the rush of writing news to keep ahead of a linotype , the making up of forms , the scratching of my hair to consider , great Scott , is there any body I forgot ? The revolutions of the flywheel , the running of the press . Folding hundreds of papers after a late supper , the red of the setting sunshine on the addressing machine , getting little Nathan ready for bed , telling him the never - fading story about his third birthday , the winding of the kitchen clock , the hooking of the back door , the feeding of the goldfish that everybody else forgets , the washing of feet , and the long day is done . Yes , that's the way we celebrate the birthday of The Mears Newz . Just like other days . Night has come.- -Along comes George W. Palmer , the practical joker , who pinned a mechanical fly on his restaurant pie and called the waitress . He put some artificial bed bugs on his hotel pillow and called the chamber- maid . What will he be up to this year ? -Cherry pickers , growers , can- the ners , eaters , these are strenuous days on the stepladder and at belt , days that make you hungry . And you'll find us open late to slice you off bologna and sell you bread , cakes , cookies , pickles , cones and

Did you hear that Harold Burkholder imagines that he is the Hitler of Pentwater ? They put a salt water wash on the streets up there but somehow the saltiness thereof got rained out and lost its virtue . So the village dads voted to pour on oil , which puffed up Harold Tree - chopper Burkholder like a bloated toad , for he is on the street committee . In one part of town the neighbors for two blocks decided they didn't want the oil because it would get tracked on their rugs . As the anointing of the dust is presumed to be done for the benefit of the adjoining property owners these good families did not see why the grease should be pour- ed on their block of they did not like it , so two of them told Norm Smith when he came around with his kettle that they didn't like it . In fact a well - known and influential citizen had telephoned down to a member of the council and asked that the oil be left off the block . The auswer was the up - coming of Norm Smith with his coffee pot right after supper . And it was easy to see who was the Hitler back of him While a couple of the neighbors were politely asking Norm to leave off the inky storm , along comes Herr Hitler in the blundering shape of Harold Tree Chopper Burkholder , saying , " Don't pay any attention to him , he's a beefer , " and " Don't pay any attention to her , she's just a beefer . " in the meantime throwing out a volley of dams that would blockade a dozen rivers all to shivers . About this season of the year Herr Hitler Burkholder looks at himself in the glass and wonders how he would look sitting in the sheriff's chair , but he'd get just about as far in the race as a snow ball in - well , Rio de Janiero . - To Keith Corliss in Mears for soda pop and onions , ice cream and shoe strings . head lettuce and shoe polish and everything you need to make a com bination salad - Complete auto greasing job for 75c , says Murray Rossiter at the Hart Economy station where the US - 31 crosses railroad track in Hart . - And across the street Jess Lewis files saws and the Wesleyan church is painted .
