-The Crystal Lake country is a world very close to Mears and yet over the hills and out of sight . You go out Clayton Riley's road , up over the hill where Marion France lives and down into Weaver Gebhart's fruitful valley . On the top of the next hill you turn to the right because there is no road to the left , and you find yourself on Milwaukee Avenue with Charlie Wanmer's house at the sign of the cobblestone porch . Up a little farther the Ecke family rejuvenated their home . Across the road is the old Crumrine place and then William Karge , the tombstone carver . Then comes a mighty hill , not so bad as it used to be , and when you drop over the summit you are in the Crystal Lake region . The first house is Mrs. Fuehring's , but straight down the south road her son Karl has fixed himself a man sion out of the old Iral Guilford house . The Bohland house is right be- side the lake but the Peter Bohland family work in Muskegon , while a married daughter sticks by the fruit farm . The Kuhnes have a good home beside their apple orchard and an art studio by the waterside The dance hall no longer sways to the rhythm of many feet as it did in the days when the Ullrichs kept the bath house and bathing heach asmiling . How we wish Arlie was there to sell the candy bars and Ellsworth and Elgin to rent the row boats . Gone are the happy days when the young Churchills and Barnums and the Rankin girls played in the waves . I remember the time when the Gamble girls came down from Hart and stood on the front porch of the store and threw off their dresses over their heads . It looked funny to see the dresses com- ing off but they had their bathing suits on underneath . In those days about 20 years ago I used to go swimming so much in Crystal Lake that I kept my bathing suit up in a tree so it would be there when

I came walking along at sunset or midnight . Chan Elliott used to splash in the drink and it was " Hail , hail , the gang's all here . " In the evening the cherry pickers from Lelands and Pratts and Fishes , Bill- ings or Seymour Riders walked down the hill to play water ball . Mr. Keigley surveyed off his water side into lots and a few cottages were built . But now Crystal Lake is little used as a great public gathering ground as it was in the days of the Ullrichs or in those still earlier days when L. D. Estes had a passenger launch to take the picnickers for a cruise in the far shadown of the woodlands . - Mrs . Will Schrumpf entertained the Mears ladizade Thursday . Also 3 lbs . of lard for 25c - Bill Hartman cannot remember as far back as the post office at Blooming Valley . He didn't come to that blooming dale until maybe 35 years ago . But Bill says the region got its name from the profusion of flowers along the creek bottom and the sloping hillsides . - Lloyd Newstead's right front wheel froze up Friday morning in Vandeputte's yard and he coasted a mile or so to Shogren's corner when he met Alva Martin , who lent him an iron gad to spank the frozen brake and make the brake break loose , after which Lloyd no longer traveled on three wheels and one runner . - If you need a new well or if your old one needs repairing , call Frank Gring , phone 19 - F - 2 , Mears . - Patty Joslin , studying dentistry at Northwestern , came home to Hart to hang up her ankle sock . - Mart Brandon , gas winder at the fair ground corner says : " Some people don't like winter ; there are others who do . The reason for this difference I'll try to show you . The one who really doesn't enjoy the winter wonderland is he who forgets his alcohol for reasons I don't understand . The other who rides around all day and enjoys his winter sport is he who fills with Ajax plus at 20c a quart .
