Up from Plymouth where the locomotives take a drink of water and a tender full of coal comes M. T. Pinkerton and his good wife to see the landscape with Charles Hefner to show him what to see and where to climb . The timbers of the White House at Silver Lake quivered last week with the gay excitement of Barbara Sietsema , Loane Emmons , Maxine Cutler , Bonnie Canning , Lucille Carlson and Lorraine Sietsema , who had Mrs. Ruth Hale for chapter head and two - year - old Leah Rae Hall for a house pet . - At the Mission Covenant church Sunday night were some young folks from the Rapids and Muskegon to help with wind instruments and vocal chords . Sweetly sang together Ruth Margill and Elaine Brooks . - In Ensing's yard I saw Gertrude Niemeyer , who climbs better in red slacks , and Betty Faver and Lorraine Ensing , who travel up better in blue . Shirley Jean Lowe is coming up for 96 happy hours by the silica steeps . - The Heinz pickle company , who have 56 varieties and one more , grew slightly sore because a lot of their con- tracted cucumbers did not jump into their salting barrels , so they serv- ed an injunction on Abe Rafelson , Pat Johnson and other independent- buyers preventing them from buying any cucumber spines with a Heinz hump on . A test case was made with Harold Birdsall of the coun- ty line and the court ruled the pickle contract should stand if the Heinz company adequately supplied the labor . And in case the Mexican labor or other pickers was not forthcoming then Mr. Birdsall should report to the court for modifying instructions . Securing pickle pickers is not so easy as it used to be , as many girls who are willing to pick cherries on a step ladder are not willing to bend their knees in the pickle patch for fear of catching a rayon thread on a cucumber spine and getting a run in their silk socks ; or do they wear any ? So for three years the dusky maids and men from the Texas border have been com- ing in to harvest the pickles which they do for 40 per cent of the value of the delivered cukes , or maybe half . It seems more pleasing to the Mexicanos if the pickles bring more , so naturally a lot of pickles found their way to the high bidders on the independent market . In this in- flated hour when the city defense factories are paying high for rural labor we can not blame the farmers for wanting to get as much as pos- sible for their pickles . We can sympathize with their desire to realize the utmost while the inflation is on . But at the same time the Heinz

company didn't want to sit on their scales with their fingers in their mouth watching the pickles go by to Abe and Jack and Elmer . The service of the injunction on the buyers found Harold Ruckel with 100 bushels of pickles in the crates and he left them in the field . We pre- sume that next year a number of growers will buy their seed in the open market and sign no contract , then they can sell where they see fit . This would give the grower a large range of freedom ; at the same time the independent open market buyers might not be buying and the Heinz company might say they did not care to buy any pickles except those they had contracted . The growers point out that the contracts have loopholes for the company to crawl out , but the noose tightens on the farmer's wrist if he stretches out his crates of pickles to the inde- pendent buyer . So maybe we should all grow carrots or do you carrot all ? -Silver Lake is indeed fortunate to have among its aggressive lead- ers , Rev. Albert Bauman , pastor of the Richard street Methodist church in Joliet , and owner of the Pleasant Nook cottage . and father of Everett Bauman , foreign correspondent in Buenos Aires , who broadcasts over NBC . Rev. Bauman was the campfire leader at the state park last night and he had rounded up some good talent like Helen Diefenbaker , Grand Rapids secretary and vocalist at large , who led the singing while her brother Jack blew the trumpet . Helen's Ma could give readings and Louis Reedy could blow a trumpet too . For silver - toned soloists Mrs. George Meyer was the darling of the sing . Illuminated by the fire , against the background of lapping waves and ecru hills , young Mrs. Meyer chose for her solo , " The Desert Song . " Again she blended in a duet with Mrs. Joe Coeling . Swift Lathers was asked to tell about the world's smallest newspaper . Advice to all orators : If you are called up- on to talk in front of the camp fire take your coat off first , fold it in a bundle and put it on top of the bathhouse unless you are going to speak on the theme of a hot time in the old town tonight . As the embers charred from crimson to primrose and Rev. Bauman , the personnel persuader , had coaxed out the hidden talent of the crowd from under the reticence of the inverted bushels , it was altogether aquatic and proper that the crowd should sing the rounds of " Row , row , gently row your boat " in unconscious recognition of the suspended oars of the floating boats of the auxiliary audience who had stilled their craft to enjoy a Galilean service . So Mr. Bauman's fireside theatre came to its closing embers . The dismembering crowd cheered their entertainment engineer and the trumpeters and George Meyer the tall Prudential salesman with a constitution like the rock of Gibralter , who had so ably assisted by spiking the flames to greater fervor and by leading out the courage of the reluctant artists , rejoiced that this blaze - encir- culing congregation had swelled this night to a larger amplitude than for many a night . - Eva at Hart , who hustles so fast that she sells the places she advertises before the ads appear , tells me that the 5 - acre place with the roses climbing ' round the door was sold ever so long ago to Albert and Vera Belland , and the little Bellands will be starting to school soon . Vera was the lighthouse keeper's daughter at Little Point Sable some long years ago . The 65 - acre place with the grand old house and lake frontage and the row of maples also has a new boss , Joe and Axcelia Nims of North Muskegon . Axcelia has the sweetest voice you ever heard and sometime you may hear its echo over Crystal Lake . Eva , real estater , has also located a fine family from Pontiac on the place west of Shelby on the blacktop that Hart township clerk Bunch used to operate , by the name of Gibson . Don't know how much eash the Gibsons handed over for it , but not so many years ago it

changed hands to the tune of $ 8,000 . - William Heyne and Ejnar Krantz , musicians from Chicago who were in Hart giving a program in the high school auditorium last week , called on Mrs. Charles Beringer of Wilmette at her cottage at Stony Lake on Thursday . - Dora Goff of Morenci was amazed to see me carrying a grain cradle in the sand dunes , and her friend , Mr. Shaffer , wanted to know where the wheat field was . Dora's brother hoped they could find cabins to stay a couple of nights by this entrancing Silver Lake . - Alta Fry used to have small fry but daughter Martha Jean is now 19 and not such small fry any more . At Juniper the Frys fry their fish in the frying pan . - Guy Ho- man , who stands for excellent highways all over Grant and Claybanks townships , listed his farm on cleaning day Friday and on ironing day Tuesday following he had his cash in hand from Hanson - Osborn Eva . Guy says " That bunch have got what it takes to make the earth turn- overs . " - A very appreciative audience gathered in the Hart high school auditorium to listen to the piano recital of Ejnar Krantz for the benefit of the Red Cross . Mr. Krantz , who has made many pleasing concert appearances through the United States , was assisted by Mr. William Heyne , vocalist , and by Miss Mary Lou Norgaard , violinist . It was a musical treat long to remember . - Own part of a lake attached to your farm . Hanson - Osborn have a 60 of that nature . Buildings , woods , hunt- ing , fishing and farming , all for $ 1700 . Only $ 600 down . Three and one- half miles to small town . adv . - Chan Elliott is back from Eckerman , upper peninsula , where he saw Jack Ludke , the tourist baron who sprinkles salt on the landscape all summer to keep the deer sweet- tempered in the winter . - Robert Hendricks of Cleveland brought his bride up here on their boneymoon . Under the steeply cute roof of a cabin at Pentwood they dream their life plans and venture forth on ex- cursions to see the pine plains boulevards and watch the simple outdoor cookery at Duneforest in the desert . - Floyd Krauter has been spending a part of the week at the Ludington fair where he has some of the famous Wiener cows from Silver Hills Farm in the stock exhibit . The Wiener cattle are thoroughbred registered Guernseys and always make a good appearance in the stock show comparisons . - People drive 40 miles to get the choice canning plums at the Red Band fruit stand up the hill north of Hart . Benton Gebhart also has peaches of highest quality and superior size . At Benton's farm you are able to make lections from 100 varieties of fruit during the season . adv . - When you come to Hart at the fair drop in at A. V.
