He comes in from Detroit and steps into the office by judicial appointment . - Today , Friday , is the Golden Fair in Mears . The town hall is buzzing with people polishing apples and putting them on paper pie plates , cooking lunches , putting up bed quilts on the wall . arranging school exhibits on the east side tables . The weather condescending there will be a parade of decorated school children and costumed bicycles at 2 o'clock or soon after . Margie Gring . Doris wore a beige wool dress and the wedding car wore a steel jacket with streaming paper ribbons . I don't know what the groom wore . Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wygant were the bridesmaid and best man , not respectively . She wore pink roses and the roses shivered when they went outdoors . - There is a home - made sign on a plate glass window in Shelby with a brush dipped in whiting to paint a big V , and inside the big letter it says , " It's up to U. S. " Yes , victory is up to us . There is a desperate need for scrap metal to keep the blast furnaces going in the steel milis , says Emmet Roche , the Oceana county salvage chairman . Steel is made of half virgin ore and half scrap . For every pound the miner mines there must be one pound of scrap iron . The steel mills are going more than ever before . Winter comes . Roads may be blocked . Now is the time to get in the scrap . You farmers say you are too busy . You say you can't take time off to dig up the scrap . Will you sit still in sinug complacency and let the grinning Japs and the snarling Hitler crash our country's walls ? They aren't waiting while you finish up your autumn potatoes and get your deer hunting done . They Laven't called any recess ; they're right at it tooth and nail plot- ting your destruction , making bombs to fire down on Hart and Shelby and Pentwater and Mears . German spies have been over in Hart in- specting Roach's canning factory and the Great Lakes . Oh , it was four years or so ago . And you felt so proud that the German scientists were studying our modern methods of food preservation . They pulled the wool all over your eyes then and you fell for it . Some of us shuddered even then . Now , looking back , you know they were spies . A boy from Mears school is in Egypt dropping shells on the Axis . Shall we turn Lim down by not sending him enough steel to keep the bombers going ? The other day L. D. Estes was coming from Ludington and gave a ride to a hiker lad , maybe 17 , who had a suspicious looking box 3½ feet long with him . The boy seemed to know everything about the German generals and he was proud of their strategy . " Now they've got a lead- er who will get somewhere , " was the way he talked . " Do you know where I can get some 30-30 shells ? " he inquired . Mr. Estes said he didn't know and he allowed they were hard to get . " You must be going deer hunting ? " he inquired of the young man . " I am going hunting all right , but not for deer , " answered the young hiker . Then thinking how it sounded he added : " Well , I might do a little deer hunting . " Mr. Estes mentioned about his daughter , Murilynn , going to Ypsilanti and about the big bomber plant at Willow Run , The young man's ears pricked up with interest . " My , wouldn't that be a good place to drop

a few bombs ! " he said with Axis fervor . He's running loose finding out what he can , plotting no good to you and me . Let's get serious . Mr. Roche says : We have got to get into this scrap harvest in earnest . Haul your scrap to the junk yard and sell it before the farm inspection comes around . And for village people who can't get their scrap metal in , the highway trucks will pick it up on Friday , Oct. 9.
