Alex Urick , proprietor . - The grocery cat who looks after Keith corliss ' store in Mears and sends the mouse out of the house , took a couple of hours off on Thursday and caught a ride over to Hart with Albert Anderson . She embarked on the journey as a stowaway by climbing in the back end of the car with the bags of grain going to the grist mill . Half way over Nels heard her meow . And then she meowed every half mile all the way to Hart . As Albert turned into the co - op the Corliss cat jumped out and sat on the railroad track to watch the train come in . But she was persuaded to ride back with the same good company and Bonnie and Dicky Corliss were glad to have their cat back home again . - Fred Kreigh , who has more snow than any- one else in Mears , says he has so much snow he doesn't know where to put it all.-H. As he is now 28 years old , he had many things to talk over with Lis father Mark . Of course he was anxions to know all about his sisters .

Mrs. Ivan Lewis talked to the Shelby Garden club and made them all anxious to get out to their tulip beds . - Gas rationing doesn't bother Harry Fenton and wife Marvel , as they can walk out to Charlie Urtel's two miles to cut wood and visit . - In the south part of Mears one of our citizens dumped out some meat that got mouldy , and while it was cor- ered by a good fall of winter snow some of the village dogs dug it out and became very ill . Two dogs and one cat died and other dogs are still sick . If the meat were burned up in the stove even now it might save future toll of the pets of the village - Orin Wilson has been re - nominat- ed president of Shelby by the Independent caucus . - Yesterday some defense workers told me that when the war is over they are going to see Michigan , highspots of interest in the landscape of the upper and lower peninsula , like Sutton's Bay , Petoskey , Sleeping Bear , Rapid Riv- er , the clear blue water of Glen Lake , the cataract music of Tahquame- non Falls . It is a noble ambition and I hope they visit all these high- spots and the rose arbors and pine trees that lie between . And in the meantime in our spare moments let's see Oceana county first , the tama- rack swamps of Lattin , the boulder by the first court house at Whisky Creek , Cobmoosa's monument , the cathedral at St. Joseph in Weare , the park at Crystal dam , the tiny Hren schoolhouse , the riverside park at Hesperia , the shifting dunes at Silver Lake , the lighthouse tower Little Sable , the stone church , the American Youth Foundation at Stony Lake , the multiple birch tree called the Seven Sisters at Juniper Beach , the view of Lake Michigan at Cedar Banks . Oceana has its highspots too . Let's see Oceana while our gas tank is restricted . We can see the outer world after the war . - The Oceana county road com- mission after its recent trial by the board of supervisors decided to whitewash itself in the eyes of the world . So the road commission de- cided to send out some box holder cards proclaiming up and down the roads of Oceana county how honorable and exonerated and righteous the road commission felt now . They paid $ 18.50 for printing . $ 22.34 for postage , and then had to dip into the petty cash for $ 1.71 more postage . All this expense was in addition to the gas , oil , tires , and employees ' time taking this box holders stuff to various post offices . The bill was paid out of public funds , and maybe the whitewashing hood winked a few taxpayers but we presume it made Ira Fuller feel all whitewashed up and more satisfied perhaps because the county paid for the white- wash and the whitewash brush .
