As a windup to the long and whitely winter came the evening party at the Mcars church on St. Patrick's Day . The people were not in any stew because no one brought any , but they did sing some Irish songs and there was green frosted cake to eat with the red jello , which would have been green only lime flavor is not so socially acceptable . Pete Wickstra , the painter who spread the interior color , brought his wife to see how things looked and while she was looking around Pete was busy seeing how things tasted . Olga Weller pattered past the well with her tiny feet and admitted she was weller than she was last time she was sick . The dishwater , cooked on the new gas stove , was more genteel to use on the dishes and they required less soap . Howard Gasabl said be ate the biggest meal he had consumed in a long time and was in- quiring about fums for the tummy in case he should acquire any symp- her toms . Mrs. Bashaw got a little white pill out of her pill bottle in pocket book and took one after eating . In case there should develop any cases of hyperocidity there were two nurses on hand , Margaret Riley and Pete Wickstra's wife . John VanderVen , the cellar widener , Was expected to be present , but being an Orangeman maybe he didn't want to see so much green . Didn't Anne Ricks wear a green skirt ? The re- modeled basement found itself at the bottom of the new stairs . It is very conveniently arranged , with a central hall flanked on the sides with smaller rooms in which classes are held on the first day of the week . While most of the rooms are used to recite golden texts in , there is one room reserved for the oil furnace and for cuss words that came a on with it to use when the it to use when the furnace doesn't work . " Abracadabra " would start the oil flowing just as well as any other word . The furnace usually works alright . Someone bronglit a cherry pie . Taken all in all and half in half , the St. Patrick's day supper was a very successful af- fir and good nature flowed round the table in chatter and song . Elmer Krantz iln't know the folks were going to sing about the holes in his doughnuts or he would have been there too . Let us have more of these rollack ebmmunity suppers was the rousing sentiment of the people . Peck in the good old days we used to have then once a month in the winter time . Then the cellar was smaller . Now we can handle a bigger ed . The stairs used to be narrower and fat folks had to watch out and not et foo much for fear tey couldn't get up the stairs again .

Page 2

Now the stairs are widened and you can let out your belt if you want to . John felt Fuller at seven than he did at six . Some say Noel Peter- son gained two ounces . - Leonard Heykoop of New Era is getting a new set of teeth made . The sucker season is coming on and Len is very fond of these fish and wants to get his teeth working in apple pie or- der so he can crunch up the bones as he likes the whole fish . The Hart Chamber of Commerce has rented a stall at the travel show in Chicago which is to be soon , maybe next week . How nice it would be if Dorothy Beam , the cherry pie queen , would be down there dressed in costumie telling the folkks all about Oceana cherries that make such good pies . In keeping with the Easter season and perhaps to stimulate a brisk demand for eggs in the local market , Emmett Roche brought " The EGG And I to Hart theatre and the large crowds that came to see it show- ed it was eggs - actly what the people wanted . Next year Mr. Roche may show " The Adventures of Peter Rabbit . " In the olden days school teachers used to crack the dear little children on the wrist with ruler if they were caught writing left - handed . Now the teachers know better . There is no more reason why you shouldn't write with your left hand and eat your pie that way than there is why you shouldn't hear with your left ear or walk with your left foot or see with your left eye . We have always stood for that principle . Mrs. Margaret Jensen , the Mears primary teacher , is left - handed and she has six pupils out of nine in one class who write left - handed . She knows how to sympthize with them because when she was a girl the teacher tied her left haud behind her back to try to make her write right - handed . Such barbarism ? In Venezuela they teach the children to write with both hands . Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Morse , no relation to the telegraph , will celebrate their golden wedding Monday , March 22. They lived 50 years on Dem- ing Road in Shelby , raised five handsome daughters , acquired five sons- in - law and 14 grandchildren . Sam is a plumber and has put ruuning water in many houses and shiny faucets in many bathrooms . In winters he has imfrozen many pipesful of hard water , he has brought hot water to many sinks and he has one daughter living in Clearwater , Florida . In Shelby he lives close to the water works . Today we put in ink the engagement of Bernardine Veurink to Daniel Crowl , who wipes his face on a towel . - At Silver Hills Farm , a mile and a half west of Mears , one of the registered Guernsey cows , Silver Hills Comely . has a new heifer calf . And Meadow Gold Duke's Constance and Silver Hills Diana also have calves . - Four hundred people came to the style show in the Hart school auditorium to see children and young people modeled in 63 costumes , such as dresses , coats . play suits and bathing suits . Пegg's store furnished the apparel . The piano played dreamily . The barber shop quartet sang two numbers . I don't suppose they had any old women wearing the bathing suits either . I wonder who . Oscar and Rnby Worth have a new little girl . The new bricks are closing in around the metallic window frames of Hart's rising Methodist church . -Rev . Harry Parker of Pentwater has a new daughter . Richard Dn- mont has a new son - Hart's Little Theatre aggregation will show how to square the circle April 1. - George Insurance Burton is elected mrosi- dent of the Dart Rotary club - Mrs . Lillian Rodaman is spending 18 days on Long Island - Les Wyckoff , Jr. , has a new daughter . Mrs. Rosene Lambrix went down to Oak Park to show colored motion pic tires at the Bass Lakers winter picnic . I suppose they showed Ionis Docker pointing to the polka dots on a tront and Chauncey Peroy show- ing a decay to a mallard - Norman Krantz and Don Brubaker

rmed from Florida at 4:45 in the morning and shot off a shy Tookes in front of Edmer's restaurant to wake up the town - Mrs . PJJI

Marjorie Lorena Pearson will marry Bob Cross In April . So expen- in sively scarce it the time it would take to come and see you , won't you send your subscription in the mail or hand it to me on the street ? From the time the alarm rings at four o'clock in the morning until ten o'clock at night I have a hundred things to do every hour . Amazing as it may seem , this little paper is still sold at the price where it started way back in 1914. Some other papers have raised their sale price 400 , per cent , Dailies are now four or five times the price og 1914. The quaint diction , the fervent sincerity , the vibrant voice of The Mears Newz are available to those who sincerely appreciate its utterance . - When the church bells ring this Sunday it will be spring . The stern , long - lasting winter with its historic sub - zero severity will be gone . Those who ride to work and survey the wintry scene through plate glass windows may know a little about the cold inconvenience , but only those who daily walk many miles in all kinds of weather , with hail or rain or the raw- ness of sub - zero winds in their faces mile after mile , can fully appre- ciate the coming of spring . Violets are coming and along the banks of the road sides will be dry spots to sit down to read for a moment some priceless paragraph out of the wisdom of the past or some dream of the scientific possibilities of the future . Every day has its heaven and hell , but the ruts of the road can be glamorized if now and then along the banks when the sun is shining and the vision is clear I can look for a moment between the lines at a world beyond the hills . While other people sigh for chariots and Easter raiment and caviar I ask for only a stone in a great meadow where I can sit down an hour to think and solve the universe . I ask for only an hour a day to sit down on a log in a forest and read in the heritage of the past . The unceasing pressure of time and work does not give me these things but sometimes for a moment along the road I look into some little book and read a sentence and go on . Utopia is a place where all these things are solved . In the winter when food and coal cost five dollars a day and life is stern we try to think out some plan of growing our foods in the home gardens and insulating our houses so it will not take a dollar's worth of coal every day . With lower ceilings and smaller rooms and more abundant storm sash and smaller stoves a cord of wood or a ton of coal would be longer lasting . Yet many who have a large liesure and who can sit by their firesides have not the ambition to read . They , sit around and make themselves miserable when they could be transported to other Jands . They have too much time on their hands which is wasted.- Weeks Lumber Co , for windows and sash ,
