FIFTY CENTS A YEAR

If you like to ride the trains and hound dogs and rub the vapored window panes to see the towns and villages go by , come with me this morning on a little excursion among the towns and townlets of Oceana county . The trains have lost their time tables , the hound dogs do not bark off US - 31 so we'll take a broomstick like the witches and fly over haystacks and ride over ditches . If you come from the metropoli- tan centers you will most likely enter Oceana from the south through the young oak forests that are called grubs into Rothbury , the center of little Poland . When I first came into Oceana on the train I heard a new and sweet young school teacher say to her companions : " Oli . girls , there is the cutest little town up here named Raspberry . " She had mixed up Berry and Rothbury and gotten Raspberry out of it . The town now has a crate mill , a small foundry making iron stars , a post office with a push - button by the general delivery ( ring us if you need a stamp ) , Chester Tutak's hardware . a feed store , Fred Webber's garage and Supersalesman Sam's great spread - out serve - yourself de- partment store . The school is out in the country . We go north and come to New Era with wooden shoes and to the happy land of the Dutch , canning factory , creamery , pickle station . lustrous and inxurious hard- wares , plate glass front grocery stores , barber shop , drug store , garages , gas stations , ice cream factory , post office and two churches . Every- where is paint , thrift and prosperity . The lumber yard booms . The brick school has four teachers . Then you come north to Shelby , basket factory , two canning factories , saw mill , fine schools , four churches and everything you would expect to find in a flourishing village of 1400 inhabitants . In Shelby Wilmer Near sells radios and appliances , Nell Wheeler , the statesman . insures windows and walls and cars that , run , and Lyonel Goodenrath sells electric ranges with ball - bearing drawers . Thomas Read , of gubernatorial caliber , brought fame to his home vil- lage by bring speaker , attorney general and lieutenant governor of Michigan . There is such a friendly atmosphere in all of Shelby that one loves to linger and some linger to love . Hart is the county seat and bas lately changed into a city . It has two canneries , a marachino plant , two bowl mills and an oil pump factory . The county stock sale is here every Monday , the county fair every September and the court

the

house all the time . This is the town where Harold Moore sells Bluebird diamonds , where Wietzke the furniture man is just around the corner but it pays to walk , where Orel Burdick stocks 200 Burdick stocks 200 kinds of radio tubes and files notches in keys , where Phil Wurthner is an authority on automotive ignition , where George Sweet does lubrication and Ervin Gleason splashes cars with new coats of enamel , where shoppers meat at Nixon's and delicatessen at Jetleb's and get a new look for their garments at Harold Frazee's dry cleaning emporium , where the sign of the flying red horse flares intermittenly over the Hart Petroleum Co. , and if you splinter your shins at a football game in John Gurney park you can ride to the hospital in Tate's velvet ambulance . And here in all seasons of the year are Eva Hanson - Osborn and John Hanson III to tell you what a good county Oceana is to settle in . They have done more to put Oceana county on the map than all the Chambers of Com- merce that ever organized , or re - organized , banked or banqueted . Al- ways and always Bud and Eva stand , as it were , on the walls of city and with a loud blast on the ram's horn tell the outer world about this promised land of orchards and lakes and contenturent . Their faith in Oceana county has a background of pioneering courage that goes back to the sail boat days when the first Hausons landed in the Clay- banks country around a century ago . Behind them is the adventurous exploring courage of the Viking sailors . Pentwater is an old town by the sea and its history goes back a hundred years . Before Hart had two houses Pentwater was a booming village . It made bricks , lumber and bedsteads for the pioneers to sleep in . It made wash stands for them to lay their teeth and hairpins on and bureau drawers to put away their red flannel underwear until the bobsleds came back to the woods and the oxen quit switching their oxtails at the summer flies . Five churches sing in Pentwater , thousands come to its Summer beaches , the bakery puts real blueberries in its pies , Emmett Roche brings entertainment to his playhouse . the Shaw Insurance Agency writes a blanket of protection over the roofs of the village , Simpson's dairy sells buttermilk and chocolate - covered friedeakes , Cook Rich- mrond sells cottages and frontages , and Esther Dempsey writes down the history of the historic town as it is lived day by day . Pine trees , dunes , watersides , needle paths , Indian trails , rest and quiet , that's the charm of Pentwater that nestles by the sea . For one hundred years it has been port and portal . The bedstead factory has long ago cast its last castor and thrown the castor oil into the channel . the corn - husking Indians whose evening campfires burned picturesquely before their canvas wigwams , folded their tents when the pea cannery folded a quarter of a century ago . Clare Demmon used to walk to work with Minnie Iteen , George Woodward rattled the cans , and the lovely Nielsen girls came down to see their millwright father . Crystal Valley is a hamlet about a dozen miles east , with two stores , a church , school bell , town hall and post office . The Indians come down out of the hills with their furs . Mrs. Brown is nurse of the town . Ferry is a hustling crate mill town with three groceries , a hardware , a town hall and a damsite . a Methodist church where they sing , " Will tirere be any stars in my erown ? " and a Wesleyan church across the road where the cholf auswers back : " No , not one , no , not one . " Hesperia is astraddle the fence between Oceana and Newaygo . John McLaren's drug store and Hank Senecal's theatre are on our site . Walkerville has a bank , 12- grade school and a lot of business places . Walt Childs keeps it in order . Mears , the gateway to the dunes , has a blacktop boulevard running through a long line of maple trees , a newly burnished main strest with new buildings , Stover's gas station and Anderson's plate glass

grocery and Elmer's bakery and restaurant . A nationally famous new paper is published here .
