Forest , my son , I see you have been bolting together the two - by - fours for your new work bench at the foot of the cellar stairs . If you would run your plane over your rough timbers and serape away the hairy wooden flbers you might discover three scientific betterments . When your gadgets start to fall you can catch them in the air without the danger of a side - swipe sliver ; there will be less danger of combustion from grindstone sparks , and you can paint the planed timbers with one- fourth the turpentine and lead . With beautiful orange legs and yellow top , your bench will be more attractive and your lathe will turn with lubricated gladness . Some red and green trimming on the back ledge will cheer up drab winter days . Fifteen years ago I painted the bright red orange panels of color on the walls of the editorial room in the Little Green House for spirit elevation on dark December days to catch the fireplace gleam . Tomorrow when you are sixteen you will be nail- ing on the top boards of your bench and your little brother , Birch , will give you some sand paper to smooth off the table top where perhaps many a clock and phonograph and gadget will be taken apart and put together again with maybe a few extra parts left over to start another machine , where the shavings will slip away from sail boats , where toys will be made for little brothers and where perhaps some new invention may be brought forth to lighten the labors of the world . I never had a carpenter work bench when I was a boy but I had type and printing outfits and typewriters and rows of chemicals and telegraph lines and a dynamo and books , and I had a dream world , and these things were furniture in my house of golden dreams . I never had time to loiter in the village stores for always and always I had hundreds of things I wanted to do . Tomorrow . Forest , when you are tall sixteen , your moth- er will give you a new steel vise to clamp upon your bench and grip your saws while you file them to sharper edges . And I will rummage in my room among the paper bags and try to find you a jig saw to run with your motor so you can cut out Sunbonnet Sallys to put on the lawn and book ends to put on the parlor table . You can set up the angle Iron frame of your wood lathe and maybe you can study how to cut out the turrets of chessmen castles and the mitered helmets of the bishops . How wonderful to you is each new issue of the Popular Va . chanics and Popular Science Monthly that Billo gets in the mail . Eel-

son had his work bench in the baggage car of the old Grand Trunk that ran to Port Huron and you have yours at the foot of the cellar stairs . The cellar door is the gateway to a wonder world of activity and dis- covery . In his back yard shop Ralph Barton in the wintertime made many cherry ladders to sell in June for $ 1.00 a foot . Thomas Schrumpf sawed and nailed many a crate in a side room of the barn . It would be good practice for you to make one crate and one ladder at your work bench to increase the skill of your fingers . Each different job you turn out on your lathe gives you increasing skill , just as each new theorem in geometry gives you added sharpness to tackle the problems of life and business . The home toy shops of the Black Forest and the Austrian Mountains labor on for years around the kitchen table with less equip- ment than you have at your ambitious bench at the foot of the cellar stairs . Your little brothers , Nathan and Dale and Birch , standing about your bench in big - eyed wonder and interest may roll the sawdust in their fingers and catch the contagion of work shop ambition and want to make things .
