Clarence Twining has been pampering his stomach lately as it was ailing . He eats lots of milk . - Keith Corliss , the grocer in Mears , says to get your Sunday bologna on Saturday night . He closes Sunday . Let Geneva sell you some oranges , celery , lettuce . adv . - Fifty years ago the Swedish Mission church was organized in Mears . They bought a house right in town and had services there . Rev. Lars Hagquist was one of the organizers . Golden township was then and still is , we believe , the leading Sewedish locality in Oceana county . In 1898 they built a church about a mile west on a little plat of ground secured from the Hagquist farm . He was the first pastor . Peter Johnson , now 87 , was one of the first members . Their were 20 families attending the church then and services were in Swedish for a long time , but are now held in English . This Sunday . June 6 , the golden jubilee of the church will be held with Prof. Theodore W. Anderson of Chicago , president of the Swedish Mis- sion churches of America , preaching at the services at 3 p . m . and 7 p . m . A history of the church will be read in the afternoon service . As many people may be here from a distance , a picnic will be held on the lawn between services and the evening service will start at 7 instead of 8 as Prof. Anderson must catch a train for Chicago . Mrs. Edward Hanson and husband of Manistee will furnish some music and Rev. Carl Peterson of Muskegon also will . This will be a great day for the Swedish Mission church in Mears and Wilmer Carlson anticipates a large attendance so he took the stove down to make more sitting room . From the Heights to the Silver Lake dunes came Marie , Elaine and Nancy Schroeder , sisters three , together with their mother who went through high school only missing one day in 12 years , and that was a Labor day when her folks were coming home from a trip and they thought the teachers wouldn't count her absent because it was a holi- day , but they did anyway . With the Schroeder sisters came Doris Tefft and husband , Frank , just married . - Lifting up a new electric light pole in Shelby at Rufus Wesley Twining's corner did not bush Clyde Bush , as he had planted light poles often before with Mr. Myers from Me- lendey street in Ludington . If the state soil conserva- tion committee from Lansing thought they were going to meet a mere handful of people at the meeting in Hart Wednesday night they must have been surprised and shocked to find a crowd of 600 people . Oceana citizens who value their freedom to cultivate their farms as they see fit certainly turned out in large numbers to protect their rights . They didn't aim to have anything slipped over on them . One of the foremost defenders of liberty in this county is Victor Ruckel of Peach Ridge , He has generously given weeks of his time that bis neighbors throughout Oceana county might know the blight that could come upon their agri- cultural liberty if this soil set - up with its drastic penalties were al- lowed to become operative in Oceana county . He persuaded Judge Frank E. Wetmore to come and expound the penalty provisions of the statute , and the judge's eloquent and fearless exposition of the law was far from comforting to the gravy train boys who hoped to put this thing over so they could get plenty of soft committee work on the snoop committee . The applause to his climaxes was tremendra was a night when the cause of freedom bad its own . The thundering indictments of Stanley Ovenu from the gallery were strong for the cause of the farmers ' freedom and he was loudly applauded . Almon B. Hill , an old war - borse from Walkerville , told us with great feeling his belief in a man's right to protect his farm from dictators . Mrs. Roger Southwick wanted to know who was going to take the ballots .

whether it would be a supervisor or clerk or just some soil committee- men sitting in solo presiding over the can . Monroe Hawley thought it would be a good idea if the chairman would read the whole statute . Mr. Hoffmaster , the chairman from Lansing , inquired : " Are you run- ning a law school ? " or something like that . Monroe , who runs one of the largest fruit tree nurseries in this section of the state , simply an- swered : " Everybody here knows what I do . " The dean of agriculture wanted Mr. Wetmore to read on further in one paragraph and Mr. Wetmore said : " Yes , I will read on , and I have an idea that the more I read the less you will like it . " There was tremendous applause . Swift Lathers told of his visit last week to the West Ottawa district where the federal expense alone is stimated in the neighborhood of $ 15,000 a year for a part of a county . " We would be tied up thing for at least five years . That would be $ 75,000 spent on a set - up which is not only unnecessary but dangerous to liberty , to the farmers ' freedom . Congressman Engel estimates the national debt at the close of the war will be 300 billion dollars . Oceana's share on a population basis would be 30 million dollars , over three times the assessed valuation of the country . The war must go on , but we should retrench on every unnecessary civilian expense . If you farmers let them put this thing over on you , then you will be no more independent American farmers , but only wire - operated Charlie McCarty's .
