CHRISTMAS IN THE LAND OF MEARS !

A spirit is abroad in the land as soft as the snowflakes and as gentle as the voice of the pines . The people of Mears are walking often down the long white si- lence of the colonnade of the maples coming from the train with many parcels , bending much over the dry goods coun- ters of the village stores , and taking many packages to the lit- tle tin post - office that stands by itself alone . I am thinking about you today because it is Xmas and tomorrow because it is the day after Christmas and so on thru the year . I may not be able to tell you about it every day be- cause you may be far away or both of us may be very busy . But as I take my Christmas walk across Silver Lake and into the silence of the frozen dunes your spirit will walk invisible beside me even as it will in June .

Each Friday night big crowds squeeze into the Amuse Theatre in Hart to follow the screen serial called the " Silent Avenger " and every night they leave the hero in some terrible predica- ment , right in the hands of his enemies , thrown overboard from a ship and drawn into the swirl of the propeller blade or caught in a room with a thousand big knives descending on him . The crowds go the next Friday night to see how he escaped and when the last reel fades from tre screen the hero is in a breathless hair - raising predicament .
