Miss Mae Riley who belongs to the house of the unafraid has been home from Grand Rapids for the holly days , telling her admir- ing friends about the business office world in Grand Rapids in which she moves as complacently as the pendulum of a clock work .
Tom Collins and his plant friends live south of Hart on the great serpentine boulevard and here it is that Tom planted a hick- ory nut tree years ago when Dory was a boy and now he has gath- ered nuts from the tree , great big hickory nuts too . They are won-
ders .
Gee , I'm glad I just happened to pull that hickory nut out of my pocket . Not that it was going to explode or anything but be- cause it reminded me of Ethel Babbitt the girl who lives next door to Collins place .
And not that she is so wonderful in particular . Although she is about as good as they make ' em . But because I wanted to tell you that every time Ethel makes chocolate fudge it is so soft that you have to eat it with a spoon and every time Clarence makes fudge it is so hard that they have to break it with the hatchet .
This is the way Leo Spellman lost his pie . For some favor in the remote past Mrs. Showerman the Shelby minister's wife prom- ised him a huckleberry pie . The other morning she telefoned down to the food administrator , " Your huckle - berry pie is ready , I'm sending it down to you . " So Leo's mouth began to water . Mrs. Showerman's husband picked up Vic Cooper on the way down town and they cooked up a conspiracy together . Vic went along up to Leo's office on the mezzanine floor and engaged in casual conversation with Charlie Lyttle while Rev. Showerman got Leo to go down and show him some 4 - buckle arctics . While Leo was occupied Vic Cooper , the insurance agent hops out with the pie and took it home and ate it . Hereafter Leo wants to get his pies insured and if the insurance agent eats the pies the Fi- delity - Phoenix will have to pay for it .
You just ought to know Ann McCann and her new rubber boots she got for Christmas . She lives in a red brick house way up east and buys her yeast cakes at Doolittle's store . ( adv . ) She told me she got a letter from Alton McLouth but she said she was not going to use any of her new box stationery up to answer him . All of which is very wicked and unsociable of Ann .
Seemingly the only reason why Mrs. Grace Hilbourn - Hubbell started school on Thursday morning in the middle of vacation week at the Loop school was because the Dennis Lumber Co.'s sawmill started up again that day and her Charlie - husband is a pupil of that school . The Fessenden children were marked absent because they didn't know anything about it . Next time Grace ought to send post cards to all her pupils informing them of her sudden ideas .
Subscriptions received for all magazines and periodicals by Fred Lorenz at the Depot news - store in Hart . He also sells books and milk and groceries and didn't I see some bottles of concentrat- ed cider in the window .

My wife having left me and gone fishing I want to advertise for a housekeeper somewhere between 16 and 60. I'm not particular about the color of her hair . or the number of her teeth but she must know how to wash dishes . She will get a free ticket to the movies every night as I run the Shelby theatre . Address George Birdsey , the village barber , Shelby , Michigan .
Mr. Tweed , the teacher in the Pentwater seventh grade kinder- garten is wearing a broad smile because of a ten pound girl .
Way out southeast of Hart is the saw - mill of the Dennis Lum- ber Co. It is a regular village with two hotels , a store , a black- smith shop , an office building and seventeen houses and dormi- tories . - Art Staples the fireman received a box of candy from a girl up in God's country and after he shared it with seventeen ravenous lumber - jacks there wasn't much left for Artie - Bill Bar- hitte with a crew of men built a sled to haul the saw - dust out in . It took two days to build it and it broke in fifteen minutes . - John Clawson , the head sawyer got tired of working and broke a saw- guide Friday . Bill Hartman took it to New Era to get it welded . While Bill was away his wife couldn't get the gas enginestarted to pump water to water the stock so she melted snow in the wash boiler and put the hot rain water on the sled and shoveled some more snow into the soup and fed it to the calf . - Ernest Gifford is the setter that sets up the logs . - Alfred Stiles is manager on the slab saw . Charlie Hubbell and Jack Barritt help him . - Glen Page is superintendent on the log deck . Every night he cranks up his car and goes to see his girl and gets home in time to sleep one hour . - Mart Neuman the log scaler is sure the mill cannot run without him . But one day when Mart was away Mr. King was al- most able to hold the job down .

The coast guard station in Pent- water has pulled down its chain of flags and closed up shop Dec. 31 , for the year , Oh , I mean for the winter . It would not seem eight to us if we did not take the opportunity to wish you a prosperous and Happy New Year and to thank you for the generous patronage you have given this store during the past year . Hoping that the year 1921 will have big things in store for you we wait to serve you . - THOMAS WELSH & SON , Hart .
Well if Max Field wants the fur let
him have it . He's a good guy .
Will Powers says that he and his children will do their best to beat the snow down from Riggs ' corner to the schoolhouse and if the Pearson children and Hazel and Elsa Meyer will break the path from the Silver Lake side then the roads will be open so that any time Ernie Farmer and Travers Stout want to go up and see Lae Riggs girls they can .
Gambles radiator froze and now she leaks . They should take it to Peck the tinner and get it soldered . Hart , in tincan alley . Edna Morat and her folks live on a hill at South Hart and has three black cats so black you cannot tell them apart .
Mabel Feil , now Mrs. Bunyard was up from Day- ton , Ohio to visit at home and enjoyed the wonder- little program at the Silver Lake school put on by Miss Anna Groenig and her eight pupils . Alice Pe- chumer and her little red headed brothers recited so cutely over and over to help out .
Ches Brubaker says if you have a toothache to fill your tooth up with cold water and then sit on the stove until it boils .
Let me see , didn't Pete Shaner run his neck off chasing a lot of hogs out of the orchard and corralling them in the pig pen and feeding them nice all day ? And didn't Cornelius Jorrissen come over at evening and say his pigs had got out ? And he took them home .
