One day D. S. Ackerson from down near Montague passed by an auto broken down and he called out to the fellow : " Are you resting ? And a minute later his own tire blew up and he camped on a wagon - rut with an inner tube . Then along came the other fellow all fixed up and called out mockingly as he drove past : " Are you resting now ? "

Some one asked Mrs. Evans who was looking after O. M. Wright's children nowadays and quick as a flash she answered : " John Fuller ! " You know John goes with Alice .

I went into Mrs. Sadie Ferguson's hat shop in Hart and saw her covering a shape with peocock blue crepe de chine and her ap- prentice was picking out some flowers and she had a lot of crea- tions that had been shipped in which are the envy of the high school girls as they look in the window coming down State street .

One day Mr. Brubaker cut some pieces of pork up into little cubes to take home to the chickens I guess and left it on the overall counter in the store . Frank Dowing came in and bought some things and then pointed to the sauce pan full of diced pork said : " And I'll take ten cents worth of that fudge I guess . " Brubaker laughed and the next day he took a candy box and filled it with the cubes of pork , wrapped it up nicely and tied it and addressed it and pasted on some canceled stamps and took it over to the ware- house and had Faye Wright place it among the morning's mail so Mr. Downing would find it . But Mr. Downing did not take it home and so it stayed there and Faye said . " Here's a package you over- looked , " and her employer said : " Where is it from ? " And Faye answered : " Judging from the stamps I would say it was from Detroit . " After a few days the package began to smell and odorize Faye's stately office . So she secretly emptied out the contents in the alley and filled the box up with corn and oats . And all the time Faye and Mr. Brubaker compared notes and conspired toget- her when he came down to make his daily deposit in the village bank , and they hoped to be able to get Mr. Downing to open up the package when they were around so they would get the horse laugh on him . One night Mr. Downing emptied out the corn and oats and filled the box up with fertilizer , thinking that would sure get Faye's goat . But that night she emptied out the phosphate and filled it up with sand . And we understand Mr. Downing has not yet taken the box of camdy home to share with his family .

Mable Willie was there neat as wax , as perfect and faultless as pink marble , as straight as a catalpa tree . It was Mable's mother who rattled the coffee percolator against her muff as she walked up and down five hills and through a mountain pass going home .

Every one is happy in East Shelby but clifford Prosser and he is quite sad because Ernest Schmeiding has taken Golda McGhan away from him . - They are having Sunday school at Lem Stever's at the Dennis Lumber Co's , camp - Lyman Steader has a new pair of overalls and thinks they are very nice . And the reason he thinks so is because he is janitor of the Loop school and Mrs. Grace Hil- bourn - Hubbell pays him real money . - Elsie Barhitte could not get anyone to go out for a walk so she had to take a little boy six years old out for awalk .

Very suddenly Mrs. Addie Evans sold her place . William Merrill , rid of his farm still loved the old Golden turf and he came back and bought it . And after awhile he will have some woman come up from Detroit and keep house for him . Mrs. Evans gives it over to him on April Fool's Day and goes down to Shelby to live with her daughter . So The Travelers ' Inn which has cared for the transient for quite a number of years will cease to be a tavern . A new job is vacant in ourtown . And we hang out a card for the world to read : " Wanted a hotel keeper in Mears . "

A hundred and fifty people ate supper at the monthly Mears community meeting Tuesday evening . The supper was entirely cooked and served by men . Frank Downing and Sid Fuller and Clayton Riley and J. H. Williams and Lawrence Hewson were all running around with white aprons on dishing up the oyster soup and spilling the crackers generously . Sid Fuller talked on taxation . Jim Farmer gave a mock sermon , which was characteristically picturesque of colored camp meeting eloquence , and Frank Trull gave a talk on the life lessons you learn from athletics .

Mamie Greiner was going to slide down hill and she called up Alvera and wanted to know if she and the rest were com- ing , and they said no and Louis wanted one of his chums to go along because he said his girl was right there . So Louis said he would have to go , otherwise Mamie would never forgive him . So he got up and went to slide down hill with Mamie .
