Frosted Tomato Plants

Miss Coralie Sloan's favorite expression is . " Oh ! you're Dutchy ! " Some say she learned it from Richard Davidson . - You know Richard goes with Margaret Boller ( who is the prettiest girl in Hart ? ) ( oni- bursts of indignation from Betty Jane Sayles ! ) . Well , the other night was Grange night in Hart and the Christians car was parked on the avenue with Mary Alice sitting in one seat and Marguerite in the other and Richard Davidson climbed in to sit and talk awhile and then he saw Margaret Boller coming and he slid down into the seat to make himself invisible and Margaret nodded pleasantly to Marguerite and went on by . But later she was passing the ear again and he did not have tim to slide down into a condition of obscurity and invisibility so Margaret Boller saw him that time . And no doubt at some later and more con- venient time she bawled him out properly . The Mears school had a party last Thursday night which the ninth and tenth grades gave for the seventh and eighth graders , and if you had been there you might have s en Mr. Kludy playing snap and catch ' em with Beulah Feasel . The Congressman accepted the invitation extended to him by Mr. Helmer Berg , Director of the American Red Cross in Muskegon , in behalf of all veterans organizations . In accepting the in- vitation Mr. Musselwhite said , " I consider this invitation from all Veterans groups as a distinct honor and , while I am pressed with the duties attendant a member of Congress during the closing days of the session , I believe it my duty to bring a message to our former soldiers concerning the legislation in Congress which is of utmost importance to them . " Congressman Musselwhite will make a hurried trip to Muske gon to fill this speaking engagement so that he may return immediately to his duties in the national House of Representatives . In view of the shortness of his trip and the importance of the occasion . Mr. Mussel- white will hardly have time to discuss his plans for the coming cam- paign , but , in accordance with his announcement , he will return to the district shortly after the adjournment of Congress and meet personally his many friends in the eleven counties of his district .

The poem this week by Swift Lathers called The Bird Woman , " is dedicated to Mrs. Edith C. Munger , whose unfailing interest in birds has for many years contributed to the success of the Michigan Audubon Society . She has done so much to arouse a kindly interest in behalf of birds and worked aggressively for protective legislation .

THE BIRD WOMAN

So different was she from those

Who tramp the paths so listlessly , Oblivious of songs that fall

On unattentioned ears ;

I'mnindful of a thousand notes diversified

That fling from happy feathered throats . Each vesper chorus , each matin eall

That sweetly floods in ecstasy ,

She heard and loved them all .

I saw her pass in lavendar and lace

Along a path unfrequented , beside the marsh .

A hemlock marked the place

Where she would wait the bittern's harsh

And blatant noise . Sweet sounds to her who loved the wild , Whese lonely footprints on the sands

Along the desolate winding shore

Were glad with wind and sky and gulls .

In woods where gentians held their bottled heads

Secluded spots where orchids grew .

She prayed that careless . pestilent hands Might never come . When sunrise broke She went afield to daisies and the larks .

I think I know her church , her choir . The great cathedral of the woods . She treads its aisles with reverent feet And drinks each day its music sweet . She may not say a mass in words But in her heart's an altar fire That flames unceasingly to birds .

And if her soul could choose its flight

In the transmigration of the night . When living things must go to dust And re - incarnate be .

I'm sure she would be born a tree

And stretch her arms for birds to rest ,

To sing their songs and build their nests .

And soaring wings in covering skies Would sing to her , her paradise .

Swift Lathers .
