Red Cross Seals

are ripe in the Land of Mears

Edward Coleson , the teacher at the Round Lake school , gave a box Portal and entertainment at the school house Wednesday evening . The people from the Roun Lake and Hovey districts packed in the room like sars . The big stove takes up about half the school room and the people occupy the other two - thirds . There were a lot of dialogues and recitations . Angus Peterson with his black monstache was the good looking anctioneer . He ran the boxes up to forty - seven and ninety cents , but as soon as he got the plates up to a quarter be would yell , come and get it . Nellie Lambrix . Evelyn and Ernestine Greiner were there from Hart . Almost every time a box was held up Nellie would wink at the big boys and tell them It was her box . given at the Pike Cafe by Mr. and Mrs. Westfall - Mrs . Frances Hack- ett , 28 years old , and former clerk in the probate office , passed away in a Chicago hospital Friday , after being found unconscious in a bus station . She leaves her husband , Herbert Hackett , a so nand her mother . - Miss Aina Johnson had an appredicitis operation last week .

Mrs. Viola Lee would like to thank the senders of the lovely flowers which arrived safely at the University Hospital - Reinhard Moschke and Harold Kaufmann were guests at the William Powers home on Thankful Thursday . We wonder if Harold and Miss Jewell divided the wishbone and wished for a pancake griddle and a cottage built for two - Miss Marlon France fell on her knees Sunday night in the dark at the step - up in the sidewalk in front of Chet Brubaker's store . - Friday evening , Dec. 7 , the Mears Epworth League will have a penny supper in the basement of the Methodist church . - Crystal Wel- don has returned from deer hunting bringing her husband with her , also a deer . - Forest Glen Lathers celebrated his third birthday on Thankfulthursday by proudly wearing a new little blue coat with brass buttons on it . - Miss Doris Lawhorn says she does not like tapioca padding because it keeps reminding her of moth balls . - Walter Van Allsburg is paying quite a lot of attention to Yvonne Westfall . - Mr . and Mrs. Edmond Christian are the proud parents of a baby son , born November 19. His name is Leonard Girard . - The Hart short factory has been closed down because the management said it was unable to pay the wages prescribed by the Code . About twenty women and girls are thrown out of employment . - The same day that Florence Christian went to the hospital her husband Edmond went there for an operation on his knee - cap . I wonder if Florence and Edmond wrote notes back and forth to each other and sent them by Alice Quist or Laura Lions with the added injunction to be sure not to read them . Pretty nearly every morning the nurse brought the baby into Edmond's room and put it in his room for half an hour . - Charles Edlund was a long time resi- dent of Golden township who passed away at his cottage on the road to Juniper Beach . He was 85 years old having been born in Sweden , he came to America when he was nineteen years old . With his father he worked in the tannery at Whitehall . In 1872 he was married to Miss Anna Olsen and they came to West Golden in 1871. Mrs. Edlund died nearly forty years ago and he later married Mrs. Gina Olson About 28 years ago Mr. Edlund retired from active farming leaving his chil- dren , John and Mary , in the old farmhouse while he made his home at a cottage near Juniper Beach . Mr. Edlund was a member of the Swedish Mission church . He leaves 3 sons , Charles , the baggage man

at the Union depot in Muskegon ; John , who runs the farm ; and Chris of Jackson , and also three daughters , Mrs. Oxel Anderson of West Gol- den : Mrs. Olaf Hallberg of Kalamazoo ; and Mary at home on ' the farm . Burial was at the Round Lake cemetery Sunday , services being held at West Golden church . Mr. Edlund had a host of friends who sympathize with his beloved wife who lives to tend the flowers inside the garden on the hill . - Clarence Babbitt has secured license to marry Hazel Hart . L. J. Rittenhouse has a license to marry Katherine Negake ,

August Marx , the lawyer - farmer , has his cornstalks in shocks in his yand - Tony Snyder had a big housefu Ifor Thanksgiving , including all the children . The boys brought their girl friends and the girls their boy friends . - Lillian Trembath Munson of Pentwater utters a plea for her baby , which she says she has not seen for many months : " And now they say because Mr. Munson has paid certain expenses , that gives him the right of a father to say what shall be done with the child . Who will stand by me and help me get my baby ? The man I shielded on the witness stand says his daughter must be taken care of financially regardless of any other child . And Mr. Munson says if it was his baby why didn't I ask him to marry him before the baby came . Should a woman kneel to a man and plead for marriage . No ! I didn't and I I have had to suffer . It is the woman who pays while the man goes free . He paid in money but I paid in suffering only to see another woman snatch my baby out of my arms because she had the right by authorities . February 3 , 1935 they will give her right to adopt my baby , they don't even own their own home and have been on welfare work and welfare aid the same as thousands of other families . Can they give it any better home with 3 other children to care for in the home ? Yes , Mr. Munson married me March 3rd , but that didn't restore my children . Instead he tries to say I promised to give up all my children . Why should I give up mine ? He can go to his and see them whenever he likes . Nine months since I saw my baby . Two years since I have seen my younger boy and 14 months since I have seen my oldest boy . "
