Pancakes and Taxes

Two thousand dollars worth of fire was eating away at Abner Johnson's house across from the Randall school Thursday morning . The Hart water - spouters came with their axes and helmets Mears School Notes : Alice Almquist delights in sitting with Evelyn Carlson and watching the mery - go - round of school life - Lynn Dean Estes was coasting with his sled when he struck a washout and badly damaged his nose Marion France taught in arithmetic and history class Friday morning and Alice Almquist answered most of the history questions . Ray Arnold had better be careful how he escorts Crystal Pearson around or Hugo Krantz will get jealous . own supper at the penny supper and wishes her boy friend would save his pennies and take her to the show . Now at this season of early December there is a hustle of early winter preparation in Mears , such as would set Frank Downing to glazing in new window lights for the cellar casements of the village - Harry and Frank Fenton and Tod Reames have been putting the cider mill to sleep by draining out the pipes and putting the cider press into cold storage until the apples start to blush next summer - The school children have drawn names for Christmas and we trust the similarity of names will not make Eleanor get two presents and Lenore none as it happened last Christ- mas . Mary Johnson is collecting taxes at the speckled brick ware- house . Brubaker expects to get out his Christmas candy in a week or so . Probably L. D. Estes will put up a little Christmas tree again in his auto store window . I think they are giving out the pieces to speak at school and Sunday school . The festal evergreen in the brick church will be illuminated on the night before Christmas when the traditional mouse will be quiet but darn that rat that got out of my trap last night . He will never look at the calendar and will come snooping around on Christmas eve just as usual . Many people who walked on the Mears sidewalks and grassy cowpaths in the summer time are now taking to the middle of the road where the thin snow covering has made a smooth cake frosting to walk on . Fast friendships are being formed up at high school and one ninth grade girl told me she was a regular post- office as most of the notes went through her hands . Shop windows in the suburban hamlets of Hart and Shelby are drawing many window shoppers from the city of Mears .. Miss Carrie E. Mears , leaving now for Chicago writes us an autumn farewell from Pentwater saying " Your article this week on the matter of keeping off the welfare lists is mighty fine and should be copied in the papers , I am sorry to read of the trouble which has come to you lately , " Editor Hyman Levinson writes us from Farmington , Michigan , saying : " I was inspired to sub- scribe to your paper after a friend handed me a copy , but almost a year has slipped by , until I have at last gotten around to it , I trust my delay has not coused the demise of your publication , for reasons apparent in the enclosed editorial , written after I had seen a copy of your paper for the first time . I salute you as the free - est editor in America ( if there is such a word as free - est ) . I envy you many things , and I wish you many years of success , providing success doesn't change

the Mears Newz .

Yours , H. Levinson , the Farmington Enterprise , Farmington , Mich . P. S. We used your " brick refrigerator on the cor- ner " editorial on religion in full , a short time after the enclosed - and had a lot of fun printing it . H. L. From many cities have come sin- cere expressions of sympathy and from many friends in the village , One Mears citizen who hasn't subseribed for the home own paper in seventeen years and who is evidently not any particular friend of The Mears Newz took pains to write to a city daily rather making light of our sorrow . At such a time as this if he had been made with a real heart in him he might have written a nice letter and subscribed for his home paper but instead he preferred to broadcast his dislike and his unappreciation even in the hour of sorrow . It is fortunate perhaps that all of Mears is not made up of such hard - hearted people . If it were there would be no newspaper in Mears .
