Peach Blossoms

If it takes a spider to spin a web what kind of a spider will Web Tiffany have to fry his hamburg sandwiches in . It was Tuesday eve- ning that the school boys of Mears played a game of ball with the mar- ried men and beat them . The primary room of Mears school ambled to Tennant's woods Wednesday after school for a wild flower pienic of cookies and sandwiches and boquets . Last year on one of these sylvan expeditions Miss Corrine Downing , the intermediate teacher , tore her stocking . This year Miss Alta Wright received a tear in a stocking and we wonder if next year Mr. Kludy will not go to a picnic in the woods and get a rent in his half sox . At last the Raymond twins have been named Jean and Janet . The new home of the Baileys is rising above ground now . It was rising below ground before . The basement will have several rooms including a recreation room and a laundry . The first floor will have five rooms and a bath and the upstairs will be divided into two rooms . About seven dollars was realized by the Epworth League at their penny supper last Thursday evening to pay for the artificial illumination of the church . In the window of the

Hart Mercantile Co. where Norma Snider usually displays dresses and dry goods Cyril Erdman and Eric Anderson have arranged an attrac- tice war exhibit representing Flanders field , the meadow of poppies and the assemblage of crosses row on row . It is worth your while to go across the street to take a look at it . And be sure to buy a poppy on Saturday Decoration Day will be observed in Mears by the inturning of many cars at the gates of the gateless cemetery , by the brightening of many graves with tulips and phlox drummondi , by a service at the church , by the playing of the band and maybe by the firing of some rifle shots across the remote and isolated grave of Soldier James Bond who was mysteriously shot down out by the fair grounds one night in times of peace . Nina Dearborn named her new little daughter Marion Jane and afterwards her mother sort of suggested that maybe Mary Jane would have been nice and Nina said : " Why didn't you tell me , mother ? " - In the armory at Holland , Michigan there was a new at- traction at the tulip festival this year in the form of a Dutch village with a row of houses and shops on either side of a brick village street and wooden shoes being made and a dyke and a canal with a draw- bridge going across to a painted village . Little tots with wooden shoes lifted their pointed toes in the parade . - Little Miss Gloria Abbott , about five years young , who was injured by falling off the merry - go - round at school and has been home a couple of weeks , expects to go back to school cautiously next Monday . - John Boonstra , the candy salesman , who calls on the sweet trade in Mears and the surrounding suburbs , says he would not ordinarily have an automobile radio but he traded cars and the music box came with the new chariot . So now he floats through the streets with the greatest of ease with the perfume of sound in his flying trapeze . - P . A. Wright of Big Rapids was in town the other day on business and incidentally doing some clever entertaining with freak mathematics , telling you how old you were or how much change you had in your pockets or multiplying numbers an making them come out 33333333333 or 55555555555. Give him a piece of chalk and a black- board and he could entertain the trigonometry class of Pentwater high school for one hour and fifteen minutes of breathless mystery . - In the presence of so much unrest and dissatisfaction with one's worldly lot it is a quiet satisfaction to find some one here and there adjusted to complacency and simplicity . Getting on in the world to a consciousness of sufficiency and serenity is quite possible in a little country village if yon can learn to satisfy your mind with industrious activity in your garden among vegetables and flowers , with half hours in a quiet nook

with books and magazines , with evening walks in the green fields look- ing at the sunsets and the formation of the clouds and the appearance of the evening star . You can know the joy of writing and receiving letters and seeing the fresh washed faces of people singing in the church- es . The housewife can live hopefully and joyfully and expectantly if she can be saving a nickle or a dime or a penny to buy a new linoleum for her kitchen , or a ten cent can of enamel every week to paint a kitchen chair a buttercup yellow . Scrub your floors , wash your win- dows , rake your yard , train up your grapevine , plant some morning glory seed under the pantry window , paint your hitching post , go out in the field and gather a mess of dandelion greens , black your shoes , read a story in a magazine , plan your meals with simple and inexpen- sive foods , go for a walk in the park , sit down with a piece of paper and a pencil and figure out how you can so manage that you will sub- tract 39c from your weekly living expense and the joy of saving a nickel a day will put you on the road to a new satisfaction in life . Through work and thrift and simplicity and meditation you can find adjustment and serenity in a country town .
