Consider the case of Alexander Stalker , the cowboy rancher from Montana He bought the Jesse Benson place last spring and keeps some saddle horses to rent out to the summer resort girls and boys at Silver lake and Juniper beach . A mild , good - natured fellow , almost everybody likes him . They like to see him sit on a saddle horse or hoe his crops along the road with one eye open to see the boys and girls coming to rent his riding ponies . He took his washing up for Mrs. Cole to do and she held back one shirt . Of course Alexander could have bought him another shirt but he coudn't see the justice of Mrs. Cole keeping that shirt back . Whatever she was going to use it for I don't know ; maybe to wipe the dishes on or swat the flies off John's head . Alexander Stalker simply wasn't going to be short - changed on his laundry . Down at the sing a week ago Thursday night the boys got to razzing him about that shirt he didn't get back . So they got him all keyed up to say now or never and after the sing was over he rode on horse back up to the Cole house and demanded his shirt back . An argument ensued in which Mrs. Cole obstinately refused to deliver up the shirt and finally Mrs. Cole commanded the household to bring out the family gun . Threatened thus Alexander Stalker was not going to wait until the Coles shot him down so he pulled his revolver out of the holster and began shooting into the ground saying , " I beat you to it . I got my gun first . " After someone else had threatened to get a gun out of the house to use on you wouldn't you do the same thing that Alexander Stalker did , pull your gun out of the holster and shoot into the ground to show that you were armed and ready and could use your gun too if they pulled their firearm on you ? Well , Alexander Stalker collected his shirt , we'll give him credit for that and all the admiring neighbors who remember unrepaid obligations that they never hope to collect for , are ready to yell , " Glory , glory , hallelujah , Alexander Stalker collected his shirt- " Mrs. Cole got scared and handed it out . Then after she had started the shooting talk she sent fo rthe sheriff hoo - hooing that a bad man had used his gun and demanded his shirt
