Refrigerators and Parasols

Everybody in Mears is sorry for Donna Read . Everybody but her mother , who had wrathy hands . Donna wanted to get married last week . Lovely young girl , almost eighteen . Bob Blackmer had the li- cense all applied for but it seems Carrie Read was not satisfied with the hour , the year , the day , or even the century they were to get mar- ried in ; so she beat up on her prospective son - in - law , at the same time giving him a piece of her mind . It is generally conceded around our humble hamlet that she beat up on her daughter , too . Donna not allowed to go out for fear that she might run away and get mar- ried . It is only 40 days and 40 nights until Mademoiselle Donna will be 18. But to Donna that seems an eternity . No , no , 998 times no , Donna must not go out ; she should sit at home on a foot stool and work her sampler . Our hearts beat in sympathy for you , Donna , and we'll all come to your chaivari bye and bye . - Lucille Shogren got her cottages named at last with the help of the milk man . What are you going to call it ? inquired Mr. H. F. W. X. Y. Z. Meyer . And with a gesture of . despair she flung out her hands and said : " You name it ! " " There you have it , " echoed the milk man , " Unamit . " Lucille said " Good enough ! " " That's another one , " was the reply , " Good - E- Nuff . " Say , Lucille , you know Hugh Johnson can paint those names on the cutest signboards . adv . Late one recent evening Chester Brubaker went out to his farm and got his truck hung up on a pine stump . He had to walk home all by himself for two miles . So late . so long a time did little Richard Fuller stay away from his meals while his sister Dorothy ached to get her hands in the dish water . So Olive , his mother , packed his lunch in his dinner pail and came , over to the neighbors , saying : " I saw you were too busy to come home for dinner so I packed your lunch and brought it over . If you can't come home tonight I will bring your pajamas over . " - The other day a new post office opened up at Stony Lake , a summer post office to receive and dispatch the letters of the summer resorters and several hundred students at the American Youth Foundation and the boys at Jack An- derson's camp . Berl Butler is the postmaster and keeps the office in

the store . Forty nine years ago there was a post office down there named Benona . There was a dam that ran a flour mill and a saw mill and the Benona post office was in the store by the damsite . Will Grover was then a boy but three times a week he carried the mail bag from Montague , stopping at several intermediate country post of- fices where each postmaster sorted out the mail for his patrons , put in a few more letters , read the postal cards and locked the sack up again . Leaving Benona by the damsite at 6 a . m . on Mondays , Wed- nesdays and Fridays , Will Grover drove his team to Montague and re- turned the same evening to bustling Benona burg . And now as he mends his nets and patches his boats on the banks of Stony Creek he thinks over those great old days of 49 years ago . - Twenty - one Camp Fire girls from Fremont vacationed this week at , the foothills of the Silver Lake dunes , but they were a subdued , inhibited bunch , and not nearly so lively , so spontaneous , so effervescing as in former years . Ruth Sayles , one of their teachers , was the chloroforming chaperone who told the girls to keep their faces straight and not to smile above a whisper . Perhaps Ruth has not been very lucky in love herself and e her personality has become somewhat acidulated accordingly . Why , if Ruth Sayles jumped into Silver Lake the resorters on the faraway Floridalian shore across the diametric lake could dip up lemon sour by the schuper - full . While Ruth Sayles was chaperone she resolved to keep the chaps away . None of the Camp Fire girls should have any boy friends call on them during the camp week , they must lie down every afternoon for an hour or two and take a little nap in their rest period ; they must freeze up and become facially expressionless and vocally silent if they met any boys ; they must go to bed early ; they must not go to the cupboard between meals , but they could each have one cooky to go to bed on . About the only sinful diversion that Ruth Sayles would permit the girls to enjoy was to read the bath room poetry that Mrs. Corbin had pinned up on the inside of the out - house door . It seems that Esther Corbin was a student of English and American literature and a great scholar in the cultured classics . So tractors for the edification of her renters and the pearly permanence of letters she had copied off on her typewritr a long poem entitled " The Passing PHIL I of the Backhouse . " - Resorters , your hair will grow at the lake even faster than it does in Chicago . You don't want to look like a muskrat , so come down to my barber shop and I will make you look like a gentleman . Or , if you prefer , like a lady . Charles Newton , a barber in Hart . - Joyce Wicht and Helen Demmink looked out of their bedroom and saw that the sand dune was hugging their window . It would take Freddie Wicht and Bud Brown a long time to take the sand away with a teaspoon and a wheelbarrow , so they decided to do nothing about it . - For sale , 4 - burner oil stove , small range , imitation leather couch ; also imitation leather rocker and chair , suitable for cottage . cheap . Phone Hart 12 - F - 6. - Dr . Kenyon and family expect to come to the Point in a few days to open Minniwatha cottage . The Walker farm was sold through an advertisement in The Mears Newz . Adver- tise in the peerless periodical . It has more readers to the square inch than any other newspaper in Michigan . Mrs. Villadson , who runs a gas station at her farm two miles north of Smith's Corners , complains about a neighbor's cow which got loose and ate up her choicest flow- ers . She remonstrated to the young man who owned the cow and he said : " Why my cow has judgment , my cow has taste , my cow picks
