Mason Jars
Through these September weeks I have been pondering on the great- est invention of modern times . There is no electricity , no radium con- nected with it . Complexity of mechanization is far from it . It is one of the simplest pieces of machinery you ever saw . And yet I contend it is one of the most priceless possessions America knows . It will solve family problems , occupational deficiencies , avert financial crises and solve the greatest national problems of America today . Housewives , economists , philosophers , public administrators , I invite your attention to the saving wonder of the ages , this noble implement of conservation and domestic economy called the Mason jar . The breadline , the for- tune cursers , the ne'er - do - wells who climb the stairs to the relief of- fice are composed of people who forget the magic wonder of a cellar full of well - filled Mason jars . Now when it is mellow September on the reddening hillsides , now when apples fall to the ground as they have done since Sir Isaac Newton used them to discover the laws of gravi- tation , now when pears are ready for the paring knife and peaches are dropping among the weeds , remember to wash the dust out of your Mason jars and fill them with plums and tomatoes . Half a thousand jars or more set in shining rows on your cellar shelves will make you a fortification against hunger in the weeks when the ground hog for- gets to see his shadow , will give you pantry pride and a self respect that will keep you from sending up an unholy howl to the welfare of- fice , Remember the lowly cuke and put him in a crock of vinegar ge- side the bin of squashes . There is hope for you and for your nation when the murmuring multitudes remember the September days of grace , the conserving magic of the Mason jar . - Mrs .
