Mason Jars

Through these September weeks I have been pondering on the great- est invention of modern times . There is no electricity , no radium con- nected with it . Complexity of mechanization is far from it . It is one of the simplest pieces of machinery you ever saw . And yet I contend it is one of the most priceless possessions America knows . It will solve family problems , occupational deficiencies , avert financial crises and solve the greatest national problems of America today . Housewives , economists , philosophers , public administrators , I invite your attention to the saving wonder of the ages , this noble implement of conservation and domestic economy called the Mason jar . The breadline , the for- tune cursers , the ne'er - do - wells who climb the stairs to the relief of- fice are composed of people who forget the magic wonder of a cellar full of well - filled Mason jars . Now when it is mellow September on the reddening hillsides , now when apples fall to the ground as they have done since Sir Isaac Newton used them to discover the laws of gravi- tation , now when pears are ready for the paring knife and peaches are dropping among the weeds , remember to wash the dust out of your Mason jars and fill them with plums and tomatoes . Half a thousand jars or more set in shining rows on your cellar shelves will make you a fortification against hunger in the weeks when the ground hog for- gets to see his shadow , will give you pantry pride and a self respect that will keep you from sending up an unholy howl to the welfare of- fice , Remember the lowly cuke and put him in a crock of vinegar ge- side the bin of squashes . There is hope for you and for your nation when the murmuring multitudes remember the September days of grace , the conserving magic of the Mason jar . - Mrs . Walt Hansen had the bunco club and gave prizes to Mrs. Blanche Barrett and Mrs.

Minnie Lorenz . - Some new side walks have been built in Mears . Township Highway Commissioner Sam Krantz , made a concrete cross- walk across Fifth Avenue connecting Mrs. Hilma Johnson's side walk with Mrs. George Reid's . A new side walk was put in between the Estes garage anl Brubaker's old meat market building . This irritated Otto James a little and he sent down word to Sam Krantz that if he was building free side walks he could come down and build a free walk from the barber shop to the post office on that side of the road . Then Brubaker got out his ink bottle and a camel's hair brush and painted a sign which read : " I had this side walk built and paid for it , so what the h- does it matter to you ? " It seems the same workmen were employed as made the public cross - walk , so Otto and a few others naturally thought the whole sidewalk program was proceeding at public expense , which it was not . Anyway , it is quite a comfort to walk a whole block along our main street now with solid side walk re- placing sunken interruptions in the cow path . Before Brubaker's side walk was mixed and laid there was a little mountain of sand in its place and Brubaker inked his brush and brushed out a cardboard sign which said : " Sand dunes . Keep off . " - Did you know that Mrs. Mar- gie Demmon was married to Frank Gring and they are living at her house in Mears ? Seems good to see someone living there again.- Abe Rafelson is back in Mears again buying fruit and spreading mon- ey among the farmers and the packing hands . - Patricia Hermann and her husband , Merle Haynes , and Beatrice Hermann and her husband , L. M. Hewitt , were home for a visit at the parental Hermann home on Peach Ridge this week . - The Oceana conservation league is re- building Gale's pond and proposes to make it into a county park . Sun- day some of the boys will be out there cutting brush . - In cutting of prices we might not be so strong , but in the cutting of quality meats we are there . Spitler Bros. Meat Market , State street in Hart.- Carl Stier Burmeister had a job this summer writing up the base ball scores at Stony Lake but when the swallows homeward fly what will Carl do to occupy his liesure time ? -In the primary election Tuesday William G. Van Wickle won out in the four - sided race for the Re- publican sheriff nomination . Jess Cargill gave him a tight squeeze and Walt Childs followed no so far after . There was a very close race be- tween Representative Neil Wheeler and William Bird of Hesperia . Less than thirty votes separated them . We understand Bird's jority to be about 27. In Hart many people turned out to vote , but in many other localities the voting was very light , people apparently being busy with their farm work and neglecting to come to the voting places . In Golden township less than half the electors were out , and in many other places the balloting was light . Mr. Wheeler is quite generally appreciated except in Hart , where there is always consider- able localized disaffection against anyone from Shelby , and Mr. Wheeler had hundreds of friends elsewhere in the county who would have taken the trouble to get out and vote if they had been aware of the reed . He carried Newaygo county and under normal voting condi- tions he would have rung up a good majority in Oceana . He is gen- erally well liked in both counties . - Mears school started Monday .

in the inconsistent role of a collector of old accounts . As he drove in- to a farm yard out east of Shelby a ways and mentioned his errand , he met with a surprise that made him blush a little ( if that were possi- ble . ) Jake answered : " You're just too late . I'm just getting ready to go through bankruptcy . " - We have some fine new concrete steps going up to the town hall in Mears . By the way , Mrs. Stanley Lee was tell- ing me last night that her aunt , Mrs. George Rasmussen , had come here on a visit from Stambaugh , Michigan , and mentioned the fact that her father , Antoine Belland , had sold to the township the ground on which the town hall now stands . It seems he lived in the old Spellman house next door . Do any of you old timers remember him ? -Ione Louise Gaetz of St. Cloud , Minnesota , was here in Mears a week or so visiting her Estes cousins .
