Auctions and Frosts

Frost threats and snow spits were in the glowering October sky as Frank Whittaker , the ardent auctioneer with the oversize vest , gathered the chilly crowd before Chris Feil's grisly granary beside the grindstone in the back yard , and proceeded to expose to public vendue , miscellaneous chains and cant hooks , bolts and whiffletrees which Joe kept forever bringing out . Oxel Anderson got four or five pulleys which might go to show he was tired of pulling up a galvanized pail out of the cistern and want- ed to rig up an old oaken bucket to sing to when he came in all thirsty and sweaty out of the harvest field . John Riggs got some cultivator shoes and Oscar Worth was pleased with his 80c cross cut saw . Candy jars went to Adolph Richter and Dot Lambrix . She was anxious buy another one , as the field mice are plentiful on her hillside and she wanted to protect her Christmas gum drops . Nels Anderson bought a buggy whip and a scythe without a blade . Mrs. Gus Hermann bought a few dishes to take up to Blackberry Ridge to eat blackberry pie on . Alexander Stalker , the pony rancher , got a lot of things , including , I think , the tall phonograph and a bunch of records . Frank Whittaker is a good auctioneer and keeps his crowd good natured . In such a cheerful sit- ting I find Capt . McClanathan and his good wife watching the riffling waves on the Pentwater bayou on the sunny southern side of the les- ser lake . With pride the captain glances up at the framed picture of the boat he used to sail up from Chicago to his summer home in Pent
