FIFTY CENTS A YEAR

-To those who have long beaten their heels on the city pavements , the feel of the old sand roads beneath their feet good to their soles . Such a peace abides along the untenanted trail by Joe Bartlett's corn field on the lower 40. Back in the days of old Bill Jones , the tall prophet with a beard , Beardsleyville used to have life and activity . Now there are old lilac door yards and chimney bricks and foundation stones , I remember when the George Kraus family used to live there and the day they took the train to Iowa almost 30 years ago . The samacs have grown up among the sacred boulders that held up Bill Jones ' cabin , and they are ink to you but to me they are monti- ment memorials to a sweet Auburn , loveliest village of the plain . In lumbering days when Morris lake was booming , the wooden tramway ran this way to Homer Lake and locomotives pulled the logs . Many a city toiler who envisions an ultimate home in the rural peace would be happy to travel along this road by Joe's corn field when the stalks are in the shocks . The hectic living in the cities is artificial and super- ficial . The best place to bring up your boys and girls is on the farm with its corn field and woodlot and blackberry wilds . Not only when frost is on the pumpkin , but when the dew is on the rose and the morn- ing glories dress in purple majesty , the farm is the best place to live . I look back now to 1921 and the tide of Lithuanian settlers that immi- grated to Oceana county in a great back - to - the - land movement led by a Moses from among their countrymen . Their wives and daughters sat on milk stools like a queen upon the throne and their men ruled over the furrows with a dung fork for a scepter . They raised pigs and beaus I rejoiced to know the and prospered . The Austrians had ambition . Grantzs , the Kotzians and Frankevichs , Some of them came up out of the mines to rejoice in the heaveu of the surface soil and the feel of the good earth in the furrow . Our soft - footed generation who left the farms to seek the ease of the cities would be putting stronger founda- tion stones under the national security of they would turn again to the life along the corn field roads and the bean fields to make their living

and to find peace and plenty . Not so much money to fling to the wind . not so much silver to rattle and throw down on the night club tables . but baked beans and blackberry pie for dinner and peaches and cream for supper and pancakes and honey for breakfast and a cow to bring home at milking time and socials in the old schoolhouse . I walked last nignt by Morris lake in the gioaming . Thousands in Oceana have never seen it , Thousands of charioteers riding along the concrete highways in great haste to get somewhere and do nothing when they get there , thousands in the artificial ruts of the superficial life know nothing of the priceless peace that abides by the rustling oak leaves along the old sand trails that lead down to this lovely sheet of water which is like a hidden jewel in the forest . I wish that some glowing patient prophet of the land like Eva Hanson - Osborn could talk to you and convince you of the stability and contentment to be found in rural living - Mrs . Robert O'Brien goes to South Bend to attend the wedding of her niece , Lorraine Cloetingh . Mrs. Allen Hardware Williams re- turns from a nine - day vacation in Marion , Ohio . The Ralph Stringers came up from Hart to close up their Juniper Beach cottage for the winter and take home a few autumn leaves and say hello to Mrs. Wal- lace . Howard Hill invited Jerry Sullivan up the road to eat Sunday Robert Cunningham from Detroit has moved into the Wright house in Mears , which he has purchased . Mrs. iglooks just like Myrtle Kraus . She likes to put jig - saw puzzles together to make pretty pic- tures . He is painting his house , which always was one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in Mears . They would like to buy 20 to 50 hens . - The Chester Worths , who did live in the Orin Sherman house for a little while , are now more happily situated in the Riley house on North Maple avenue where they have electricity to say giddap to the washing machine . - Keith Corliss has citrus fruits in his front window and fresh meats in his refrigerator case . adv . - Grace Genung is happy to see Bob Snyder transiently home in his uniform . So are we all very glad to see Robert with the evening convocation in L. D. Estes ' store where congress meets to settle the war in Europe and the price of but- ter and eggs in New York . - Light , portable gasoline engine for sale , $ 18 . Billo Lathers , Mears.Adolph Heeg is having a sale this Saturday and Peach Ridge will gather socially around the porch . - Harry Mun- roe is running the cider mill in Benona this year . - Walt Burmeister's little boy , Dale , who is three years old , was up at the Youngs school on ration day looking over the kindergarten desks and thinking of the day when he will rattle a dinner bucket along the road . - Ray Trom- bley made the young people of Mears happy by taking them for a hay ride party behind the team one evening . - Fleet Birch Lathers , who will be two years old in November , went into the pantry with his mother to find something to play with , " Egg , " he said to his mother reaching toward the appliances . Then he elaborated descriptively ; " Round and round it goes ! " He wanted the egg beater . So if you mothers can't get your two - year - olds steam engines for Christmas you might buy them an egg beater.-

The growth of the census at the big barn at Silver Hills Farm re- quired an expansion of housing quarters to take care of the new calves . Paul Wiener thought of his spacious implement shed , which was 20x80 feet . It was a big new concrete building and half of it could be used for a calf barn to take care of the overflow . So he says to his Good Man Friday , otherwise known as George Crist , " George , you have the inside fixed up to suit your fancy . " So George got a carpenter and created a calf barn " with a college education " and varnished ceilings .

and some of the calf bed rooms even have bed springs under the straw . I tell George he ought to have pillows for them , too . But the bed springs really serve a useful purpose as they keep the calves up off the cement floor and the straw bedding stays drier . The bed rooms are drained . Now about the Guernsey census . Silver Hills June recently had twin calves , a male and a female , Eth - Mead Foreman's Girl had a heifer calf as did also Scottland Farms Marlene . Scottland Farms Victoriana had a bull calf with a white letter V in the middle of his forehead . Hooray for Victoriana , marking her calf with her own initial.- Oraer or Publication - Final Administration Account . STATE OF MICHIGAN , The Probate Court for the County of Oceana .
