Mary Alice Christian Anderson - sounds like Hans Christian Ander- son , the writer of fairy tales - well , Mary Alice still keeps her fairy complexion and her husband and baby Barbara were up to Mears for a visit and had along Dr. Taylor , osteopath , who knows Dr. Russell Riley . When Glenn and Lois Mersing take turns in carrying their baby they are sharin ' Rose , for her name is Sharon Rose . - Edith Brown from Ccemish is visiting her aunt , Grace Estes . Murilyn Estes went back to Wayne to work . - Geraldine Carr came from Rudyard to visit Mrs. Ione Bailey . - Remember Jimmy Carpenter who used to come out to the Kyburg farm and take a shower bath under the elevated windmill tank when he wasn't picking the beetles off the potatoes or swimming in Silver Lake ? Well , Jim is now way down in the South- west Pacific fanning himself with a palm leaf fan and helping to dust the Japanese beetles out of the sky . And they say that Lottie Fuller set out her best china for her Worst company . Mrs. D. J. " -Joe Van Agtmael , 16 years in the army , perished as a Jap prisoner in Manchuko . He was the son of Pete Van Agtmael and has a sister , Dell , who is a missionary in India . - Good old Frank Bagley retires as citcuit court stenographer of the Oceana - Newaygo - Mecosta district , a job he has held for 13 years . Now comes Daniel Vander Werf with his fountain pen and a quart of ink to jot down the utterances of the wit- nesses and the interrogations of the attorneys . Towne is going to town . To East Lansing he goes with Bob Straley to attend the Grange youth conference . - Earl Cilley is doing odd jobs for Gerald Ensing , like scooping the water out of the boats and feeding the rabbits their hay . - Will Schrumpf and Sidney E. Fuller are two Gold- en residents on the July jury for the circuit court . To Keith Corliss in Mears for oranges , carrots , head lettuce , frankfurts , cookies , cakes . and other things you need to eat on your vacation stop at the lakes in the Land of Mears , adv . - Kathryn of Buchanan , a 3½ year old reg- istered Guernsey cow at Silver Hills Farm , has a record of 10125.9 pounds of milk and 454.6 pounds of butter fat . Now they are worrying about the Cripple - A , which was injured June 26 , and the gravy crew are on the wrecking train now . Donald Broner , 25. of 1063 Fleming Ave. , Muske- gon , drowned in Silver Lake Monday evening at 8 o'clock . He was rid- ing in a canoe towed by a motor boat when the canoe upset . Chris Thorsen was riding with him in the canoe and Mrs. Broner was in the motor boat ahead . The sheriff's force recovered the body at 10:15 p . m . Coroner Merle Wood was summoned but decided an inquest In- necessary . Mr. Broner attended high school in North Muskegon and in Montague . He was employed at Continental Aircraft . This was the first drowning at Silver Lake in quite a number of years . It is most re- grettable . Canoes are treacherous things for people who are not good swimmers . They upset so easily . Besides his wife Mr. Broner leaves two small children . - Rev . Herbert M. Parks is the new Methodist min- ister for Mears , Hart and Elbridge . Elbridge will have Sunday school at 7:00 o'clock in the evening and church at 8:00 p . m . In Mears the hours will be as they have been in the morning . - Jerome Ahlstedt , the Swedish minister , is helping Leonard Peterson with the Boy Scout work Wednesday evening - Helen Husband brought her husband up to Pentwater to visit Mr. and Mrs. Burton S. Shaw . - Alyce Lovell and her friend , Mr. Lindgren , were up from Chicago and were surprised to find we had Lindgrens living in these parts . - Dr . Norman Heysett and his beautiful wife arrived in Pentwater from South Bend to occupy the Acorn cottage on the channel . - Mrs . Dr. Lemke is living in her corner cottage on the channel . - Roger Southwick didn't have any fire crackers handy to entertain the Leavenworth children when they came up from Grand Rapids for the 4th , but he had some soda crackers . And the children can throw pebbles into Cobmoosa lake to hear it splash . - Home on a furlough from the Honolulu country comes Sgt . John Theeuwes . - Oxel Halberg sold one of his farms out by the Shaw school . - Myrtle Kraus and husband and little Norma have been here visiting her father , J. W. Kraus . - If this dry weather keeps on , Carol Fuller will have to turn the hose on her pink spiraca bushes to wash off the road dust . Carol thinks white spiraea is prettier . - Mrs . Hasty's daughter , Phyllis , keeps cool on the front porch with a new old - fash- ioned pompadour off - the - neck hair - do . - Eve Lindgren wen to Buck's Corners to celebrate her birthday at Aunt Mable's . - Walter Jenison re- ceived a telegram that his son Avery passed away in Iron Mountain.- Reed Ellis of the Atlantic fleet is spending a week in Hart . - Larry Ray had his tonsils out . - Melva Norberg goes to Ann Arbor to study

nursing 11 weeks and then to Butterworth to get her bread and butter no matter how much butter is worth . - Otto James , Muskegon barber , was up Sunday giving the whiskers in his door yard a trim with the sickle . Frank Kenfield , 82 , was hit by an automobile while walking on US - 31 near his farm two miles south of New Era and expired in the Shelby hospital . And I wonder if the car that hit him wasn't going a lot faster than 35 - Jim Fuller worked up a good sweat hoeing cu- cumbers this morning on Charlie's 40. - Harold Van Tassell was patch- ing a bicycle inner tube for his young folks down by the Corliss free air hose . Betty and Jimmy and Donna and Joyce do a lot of wheeling these days . - Cherry picking has started in Mears on the sweet varieties and the early Richmonds are getting red . - The Neil Wheeler Agency calls your attention to the teeth in Michigan's new automobile law . The new law becomes effective July 30 and every motorist involved in an acci- dent will have to be able to show a public liability policy or be able to satisfy a judgment or he may have his driver's license revoked and his car impounded .
