Rambler Roses

are ripe in the Land of Mears

Jack Frost visited the sand dunes in July . He lives at Spring Lake and brought along Miss Fairy Jones . If I find any early autumn tints in the leaves I will remember that Jack Frost and a Fairy came walk- ing by . With them came Don Harris of Muskegon . - Jean Roth is now a graduate nurse . She married Donald Barnes and they spent their honey- moon in Milt Swingle's log cabin in the wood at Lynnwood . - Klap , klap came the Klaps without their wooden slippers , Barbara Klap and Bob Klap and John Klap and Mrs. John , all the way from the Rapids to see Silver Lake again . - For sale , a 1½ ton Chevrolet platform truck . Ideal for hauling cherries and cucumbers . A - 1 condition . Flood Motor Sales , Hart . A serious dune scooter accident occurred at Silver Lake in the Fourth of July season when Catherine Van Zalen of Grand Rapids re- ceived a broken leg . An ambulance hurried through Mears to get the suffering victim and later came back taking her to the Hart hospital . The following morning she was removed to Grand Rapids where she will be laid up for weeks and weeks . The best way to see the sand dunes . Catherine , is to walk . It is safer and cheaper and affords more lasting satisfaction . And those who walk have time to see more . And the rest of you who have not ridden , think well before you do . Can you afford to be laid up for three months with a broken leg , losing all your wages ? And things might go worse than a broken leg.-C. C. Nicholson is not the father of Montgomery , Alabama , or Montgomery Ward , but bis son is Montgomery Nicholson . They hall from Decatur , Ill . The Hawkins family of Grand Rapids are building a new cottage at Silver Lake , and thinking they might want to play ball they brought along their grocer , Casey Malcott , so they could have Casey at the bat . The Methodist church in Mears , which has waited for seven months for their oil furnace to get installed , would do well to tell the slow Muskegon dealer to haul it away so they could put a coal furnace back in the church cellar.- FARMERS : Buy your army surplus tents now for your hired help . 16x16 brand new , $ 49 ; used , $ 32.50 . Next time Jake VanderHulst comes up from Zeeland to Silver Lake he may bring his wooden shoes and walk on the water . And Mrs. Lamer walked across the dunes to get Bill Lamer . She got him several years ago and now they have a six year old Nancy , a four year old Marilyn and little Roger Lee is two . - Birch Nest is the charming Ensign lakeside cottage where H. T. VanderWerf brought his little Paul and Nathan to eat their rusk in the dusk if their mama sets the bowls on the table before she practices do , re , mi , fa , so , Ja , ti , do , as she is a choir director and must keep her voice in form or Reform . In the same kitchen Mrs. Evert Voogd tells her Stanley and Lyravine they can unlace their shoe strings before they go out to wade . People of Mears , are your taxes high enough to suit you ? Well , they are going to be higher this December anyway because real estate valuations have been marked up all over the county . So your taxes ought to be high enough to please you . But they will be higher yet if you don't turn out to school meeting Monday night and swat that extra four mill in- crease the school board is trying to put over on you . This same school board last summer felt so independently rich and lousy with money that they kicked two grades out of our Mears school , thus losing for our dis- trict several hundred dollars of state aid we would be receiving for our school if these grades were still taught in Mears . It was an atrocity for the Mears school board to take these grades out of our se ool . It was a rash injustice to the finances of the school as these grades could still have been taught without any extra teachers . without a dollar of extra expense to our school , and our district would have received several hun dred dollars more in state aid if these pupils had been faught in Mears , Then when the voters of the district petitioned the board to call a special school meeting of the voters to re - establish these grades the board flatly refused to let the public have an election . This refusal is under the school laws of Michigan a misdemeanor , punishte by heavy ne and Imprisonment in the county jail . Now on top of all the school board

arrogance , after all their mis - management of school affairs and letting the school district lose several hundred dollars of state aid money , they have the brass to ask the voters of Mears school district to dig down in their pockets for an extra four mills . The people of Mears should turn out and vote it down . What Mears needs is a new school board , one that can manage the school finances with greater wisdom and foresight , a school board that will reach out and encourage every child possible to attend school here , instead of kicking the children out and putting them on a wagon to ship to Hart . Our school district loses the state and ou every one of our children who goes elsewhere . A school board that kicks our pupils out of our own school is in effect throwing hundreds of dol- lars of Mears school money out into the street . Therefore , let us swat the four mills and if the school board can't make things go with what they've got let them resign and we will put in some new timber that can make things go . Swat the mills , your taxes will be high enough this De- cember anyway . Mrs. Willis Purdy has been clerking in Anderson's grocery for a while and during the summer rush Blanch Foster may be tying up packages . A few weeks ago the school board of Hart , feeling their pocket book was a little full , voted salary increases of several hun- dred dollars to their teachers , getting the superintendent's salary up to $ 4,000 . The total increase for around 18 teachers would undoubtedly make an extra load of several thousand dollars . Now the Hart school board is asking the people of Hart school district to rote an extra 10 mills for three years at the school meeting Monday night . Think of it , citizens of Hart , a tax of 25 mills on each dollar of your real estate for the next three years . And the property valuations were already boosted this spring . If this ten mills passes , and it may if you do not rise up and go to the polls and swat it down Monday night , the tax burden in your village will be oppressive . Owning property will be a disadvantage , peo- ple will want to move out of town , into the country to get away from oppressive tax burdens . What you folks in Hart need is a school board that does not spend its money so freely and then holler to you to dig up an extra ten mills , Remember , 25 mills is 2 % per cent of your real estate valuation , and that has already been increased . Turn out , you good com- mon people of Hart . turn out and swat the spenders . This newspaper has always been the champion of the underdog and the oppressed aud it raises its voice now to prevent the oppression of the people by the needless increase of their tax burdens . Attend school meeting Monday . CARL'S SERVICE on the main corner of Mears gives you quick serv- ice on gasoline , oils and tube repair . Greasing jobs and oil changes at inside pit .
