The call of the wilderness takes many men out into the big woods all over northern Michigan now in pursuit of antlers . They sleep in tents or trailers or wrapped in a blanket under the stars , and the major benefit of the excursion is not the venison they get or hoped to get , but in the healing contact with nature . Mankind would be better off if they had always lived close to the forests . The cities shackle men with proprieties and artificial comforts , yet in their souls there is the thirst for the wood- land rills and they would have more happiness if their feet were incased in moccasins treading the mosses and leaves of the forest floor . The search for industrial employment takes many away from the woodland scenes they love to the constricted life of the cities . They rattle a lot of noney in their trousers , spend it as rapidly as they make it and find themselves at the terminus of the year or the end of ten years no richer than they would have been if they had stayed by the forests and lived the simple life . Returning on some brief November vacation because of the call of the wild , they look in at some playmates of their youth who always stayed in the country . These may have found happiness in huts or they may have big red barns of plenty , but they lived a saner , slower tempo and remained close to the forest . You who live in the country or inhabit the little villages , don't ever get the idea that your sons must go away to the skyscrapers of opportunity to find success and happiness . Even in Mears or the open country there is ample living for you . What you need is a philosophy that will enable you to see the superior advan- tages of country living and the ability to find happiness here . It is a case of " Open mine eyes that I may see glimpses of things Thou hast for me . " Karl Giese established a machine shop at Silver Lake where he could not only follow the calling his heart and mind adored , but where he could also be close to the wilderness he loved . He is to be congratu- lated on his wisdom . Lloyd Lewis dreams out gadgets he can manufae- ture at his little workshop on the self - same shore . A carpenter , à mason like Charlie Eckholm , a farmer can live close to the wild . Your boy and iny boy need never listen to the artificial allurement of city life . Our ildren do not necessarily have to be hunters to enjoy the forests . They can let the animals live and still be happy with them tramping the for- est paths . There is a lasting satisfaction and a healing comfort for those who live always close to the frees . And their years are often longer .

After a long round - about trip through Weare they are rattled down hill over the Glover hill bridge , which last year caved in just after a car crossed it . If a car with one person in it could send a bridge crashing , what might happen to a school bus with 22 children in it ? One side - swiping blow sent the Birdsall boy's crashing into the drowning waters at a Ludington bridge . One slip on Glover February icy hills could send the school bus crashing off the bill into the river or turtling into the flat where the bus could burst into of flames on being upset . The mothers at Lake Chalon did not think these things until after their 22 children were drowned in the ley lake . It is time the parents of Mears got to thinking and got into action .
