We see by the cold west wind that beats with snowy fury against the insecurity of our coal bin window that winter is actually here , notwith- standing the calendar in Ayers almanac allows 30 more days of fall . It was only yesterday we replaced the broken light in the south back door and the day before we came back from Fenton's hardware with a new pane for the east upstairs window whose fractured glazing had been a pain in the neck to my wife for 90 days of summer when it didn't make any difference . So let winter come . Get out the frying pan and the pop corn . Bring up a pan of apples out of your cellar and you can settle down for a winter evening . How much better your family is around the stove than out skidding all over the slippery pavements . The radio brings in entertainment and the kindling is behind the stove to start the pancake fire for morning . Nathan is doing his arithmetic numbers , Sylvan Dale is folding a few hundred papers , Forest is tooting the dust out of the trombone scaring the mice away , little Birch is perforating thousands of little green dots on the revolving check protector , the tatting shuttle c.icks , the thread unwinds in the Spry can , the typewriter clicks , the addressing machine inks its stencils , the evening is on . Let the snow beat against the window . How long before Nate will make a pinwheel wind- mill and start it whirling over the warm air from the register ? When your children are home around the sitting room table you know where they are . Let the snow beat against the western window pane . There are worlds of picture books to look at , games to play . Here is security . Their pillows are ready on their beds . Bye and bye they will go upstairs to pajamas and nighties and play word games in the darkened air until one by one they fall asleep and no one knows who asked the last ques- tion . I wish that all families could spend their winter evenings by the home firesides . So much of the wild night travel is needless . Hundreds out on the night roads in a hurry to get nowhere fast . Many should be home getting sleep , storing up energy for tomorrow's work and school . Tonight when the dishes are done and the lunches are packed , get out the checker board and the little tin train , the pop corn and the apples and know the glad security of evenings at home - Elaine Peterson has good natured freckles . - Hilma Jolinson called on Daisy Tennant and her four rag dolls . Mothers of Mears , these things can happen any day , even in Oceana county , even on Glover's bridge or Brooks ' ravine . George Senecal's family once lived three miles south of Mears . They figured in a terrible auto crash in Muskegon Tuesday . If mere occasional anto trips bring about accidents like this , what can you school buses going day in , day out , week after week , month after month , expect from in all kinds of weather , ice , rain , snow and sleet ? Remember always that your children are far safer at the little home school in your neighborhood . Listen to the radio , pick up the papers and learn about school buses going over embankments and bursting into flames . you going to wait until these things happen to your family ? Kenneth Jorgenson was a Muskegon boy , discharged from the Navy , and Lawrence Matthews was a former medical corpsman with the Army Air Force . This Friday morning the three members of the Senecal family were buried in Weare after services at St. Gregory's c_urch in Hart . For several days Marian Senecal lay in such a criticn , condition in the hospital that she was not told about the others bein ; killed . I am not sure if she knows it yet .
