I just looked at my watch . It is half past two in the morning . I have slept and I have risen . And before I arose I was awake a long , long time , listening to the chill curvature of the October wind whistling around the trees , thinking about the prophetic progress of main street . of doorknobs unturned on doors unopened , on stores unbuilt , thinking of windows to re - putty , of hot air pipes that must be covered with as- bestos , of my cellar window that needs a new pane of glass , wondering if Arthur Anderson had any more raspberry jam left in the big wood- en pail on his counter , and how early in the morning I could get trains out of Grand Rapids for some southern Michigan cities where I must give addresses , and how I could tell the Indians that their life was safer , sweeter and happier walking down the forest paths of the back country hills of Elbridge and trading at the Cedar store than it was to linger for one ill - fated hour on the bright night boulevards of Hart or Pentwater where marshalls are ever - willing to show them the way to the yawning bastile . All these things I have been thinking in the waking hours of the night while the rest of the household slept and the October leaves scampered around the corner of the house and across the lawn to the Catalpa trees . These are the autumn days when I must climb up over the Benona hills to see if Laplace Burnham still lights his breakfast fire by a twirl of the magneto on the back reservoir of his range , and if the muskrats munch at the grasses by Saddleback Lake , to see if Mary Ann Fleming is bringing paper dolls home from Carpenter school , if Forrest Godfrey is turning the needle valve on his Model T , to find out if the river still runs over Marshville dam , if John Salverson's flowing well still spouts a thousand gallons a day , if Rose- mary La Fever has caught all the bullheads in Homer Lake . For thirty years I have climbed into the Benona mills and descended into the plains beyond and doors have opened unto me . Six years ago in a single springtime I plodded to every house and every farm in all Benona . The kitchens and the lilac dooryards of that friendly countryside I have re- Jurned to for many years . Since 1915 I have been going back to those beau flelds and peach orchards . What a lot of things a fellow will think about when he wakes up in the middle of the night ! Well , it is ten minutes to four . Time I went back to bed and caught a little sleep it

I am to get up at six o'clock in the morning and start a busy day . Carroll Farmer put a beautiful roof on the house of John Kraus . We say it that way instead of John Kraus's house because it sounds bet- ter . For sale : Two 1935 12 - passenger Buick sedan buses . Write to The Mears Newz . Buses now located in Muskegon . Why dosn't some vete- ran start a bus line from Mears to Silver Lake and Hart , or to Walk- erville and Bitely ? -Arthur Anderson , our progressive grocer , had wooden pail of real raspberry jelly yesterday and there was a brisk sale on it . People who bought one pound came back for three or four.- Mr. Anderson is building a residential annex on the rear of his place of business and already he has the roof on it . It won't be long before Vera will be chopping the fried potatoes in the new house - Harry Fen- ton has returned to Mears after a month in Muskegon at the Hackley hospital . Marvel did a lot of crocheting while in Muskegon and Harry did some internal knitting after his operation . When they returned to Mears they found a new addition on their house which made it twice as large . Also a new cook stove was in the kitchen . I wonder how many porcupine quills Ann Ricks can put in a pill bottle . If she grows up to be a nurse like her mother she might use them for hypodermic needles . - Oscar G. Olander of the Michigan State Police says that in making up their budget to send to the legislature , they have requested an item for a state police post to be located at or near Hart . It was long understood that the station may be located around the curve from the Oceana Truck & Tractor Co. south of Hart . If they get located there and see a big St. Bernard dog running off with half a ham from Al Dumont's hot dog stand they will run out and say : " Halt , Bernie ! You can't do this to Al . " -- A poor Indian was sent to prison because he was drunk and disorderly three times . We know of a certain county in the United States where there was a certain district attorney who if he were treated likewise every third time he was drunk and disorderly , where would he be getting his mail now ? And who sold the poor In- dian the liquor anyway ? -Louise Mann and her mother , Florence Mann . saw a lot of the American continent when they rode in a plane from Denver to Chicago , wondering if their dog Mitten was lonesome back in Colorado . Floyd Mann rode along , perhaps wondering how much blueprint paper it would take to put it all on . He was going to a blue- print engineering convention up in Wisconsin but Louise and her moth- er came on up to Oceana county to see Alfred and Zella Weaver , who used to live in the same house with them in Denver . Anyway Allie did , and I guess Zella too.'Twas through the Central Agency at Pentwater that the Matthews house was sold , the Anderson house and a farm or two lately . Also that nice new insurance policy some of you just put in your strong box . Yes , Jérome Richmond , the new owner , is proving himself a " chip from the old block , " that old pioneer block that his granddad . Ed . D. Richmond , started chopping away back when Pent- water was young , and with his bride Lenore , a chip - ess of Hanson pio- neer real estaters . Well , why shouldn't the business flourish ? ' Twas Le- nore's great - great grandfather , a Norwegian sailor . who was floundered in Lake Michigan and who found his way to land up the steep banks of southern Oceana county . The clay was so slippery that the old sail- or had hard climbing , so he said . " Why not call this ' Claybanks ' ? " So Claybanks township and the original J. S. S. Hansons came into Oep- ana county . Then followed and for ever since the telling of the story by the Richmond - Hanson clan of " God's own country , Oceann county Joe Schmidt has sold his bakery in Pentwater and gone to live on a farm near Cedar Springs so he can wear red flannel underwear this

Benson , a col- lege professor of Arkansas , who talked at the real estate convention at Flint about " America in the Valley of Decision . " - Hart school man- agementeers , looking for some gullible Santa Claus to cough up $ 9,000 for three school buses , do not emphasize the fact that their revennes are hung up on a year - to - year contingency of continuance . The voters in the country school districts may have already come to their senses and turn transportation down flat next July . A single bus accident . which might happen any time , would put a damper on things . Then the on their hands.- lending investors would find they had a lemon
