The annual Golden township fair will be held in Mears at the town hall on Friday , Sept. 27 , all day . - John Gurney Park was brimfull of Brimmers last Sunday , it being the Brimmer family reunion . - In Hart school there are more twelfth graders than eleventh graders and more tenth graders than ninth graders , which looks like the population might be falling off . - During the month of June , 1934 , when The Mears Newz was only 20 years old , Miss Emma McMillan of Muskegon , who teaches down there , went on one of these university tours in an autocade across the country . There were big Greyhound - like buses that stopped to camp out along the highways . In the bus that Miss McMillan traveled were a bunch of teachers and close friendships grew up between some of the fellow travelers , and now for a dozen years twelve of these friends have been keeping track of each other by writing round robin letters . The bunch of letters would be mailed along from one teacher to another and each new recipient would take out his old letter and add a new one . There were people in the autocade from 18 states , Canada and Mexico . Recently Miss McMillan paid a visit to the editor . She was ac- companied by Bill Halloway , who has been sailing the Pacific , and by his brother John , who has been in India . I think one of these boys cir- cumnavigated the globe . Along with them also was Miss Hassey -- is that the way to spell it ? an old - time teacher in Muskegon , now re- tired . We think Miss McMillan's way of keeping in touch with the friends she made on that wonderful tour is a very splendid one . She and her friends reap great crops of enjoyment out of little seeds called postage stamps . - On Monday and Tuesday , Sept. 16 and 17 , at the Lakeside Baptist church , Miner Avenue and Denmark in Muskegon , there will be a child evangelism conference . The mornings are given to Hanneigraph instruction . Workers invited . Mrs. Isnac Floyd is laid up with a broken hip in the Shelby hospital . She fell when she opened a door . The daughters of Mabel Rolph Gasahl wish to thank all the friends in Mears for all the nice things they did during her last illness . Lillie Dahlstrom , Virginia Wold , Winifred Stoy - Harry Fox is quite an inventor to fix up that old car with a barrel for a radiator and a barrel for a gas tank . Do you remember how 20 years or so ago he made

a little automobile that he could sit in and it would go fen miles an hour down the streets of Hart ? The registered Guernsey cattle from Silver Hills Farm were excellent exhibits at the Hart fair . They won quite a number of blue ribbons . The bulls walked in the parade in front of the grandstand . - For the remainder of the season IIud's Hut will be closed during the week . Open Saturday nights and Sundays only . Fea- turing individual chicken and meat pies . Hud's Hut is on US - 31 be tween Shelby and Hart by the town line road . adv . - Wallace Lan- chester was mentioned at the Meadows ' welcome party as an English Swede ( great applause ) because he is of English extraction but is preaching in the Swedish Mission church . Friday he was driving Indiana on the Davis - Johnson southern tour but will return Saturday night in plenty of time for the Sunday services . - Wilson Near of near Brighton , who trained the William Ford oxen , was home on the week- end to see the old peg where he used to hang the oxyoke up to rest after it had been working on the oxens ' necks . John Kraus tore the old house all down . Now he is going to drive the nails out of the boards . I wonder if they are square nails and if they were made in the black- smith shop in Mears . - Henrietta Cory , who sells shirt sleeves and halt- ers in Girard's store , is on her vacation now and Avis Sarles is wrap- ping up the winter underwear which blossomed with the frost.- Roger Skinner has a new son in Kalicazoo . - A cousin and his wife from Batesville , Arkansas , are visiting Chester Hamilton's folks . They ex- pect to reside up here in these parts . I forgot their name because I wrote it on the side of a sack of potatoes as I was on the way home from the grocery store and forgot to tear it out . - Gus Krantz and ser- eral other workmen have been very busy putting the upstairs on El- mer's restaurant in Mears . They are nailing on a brick - like finish with- out any trowels . - Goldie Shafer is teaching 20 pupils in the Rathbone school . Mrs. Arthur Keck of Mears went to the Hart hospital yester- day in an ambulance . She had been planning for several days to go , as she has not been well , but managed to can 29 quarts of peaches while she was waiting for a hospital bed to be vacant . - S . E. Dexter has been tilting back in his dinner chair talking with J. H. Reed of California . I wonder if that is the same J. H. Reed who used to be telegraph ticker in Hart . - Ruth Slocum is teaching the Cedar school . The new Oceana tractor and implement store on US - 31 curve where it says goodbye to M - 82 is getting a very large concrete building ready to display hay tedders , cultivators , huskers , potato planters and all kinds of machinery to cultivate and harvest the crops . There are 30 pupils at Brooks school to ask Mrs. Lottie Hoffmyer . " Teacher , may I ring the bell this retess ? " - Bill Volpp was getting his green racer towed this morning to limber up the knee action . There is just room enough for his knees , but he has tinkered with spark plugs since he was " knee - high to a grasshopper . " - Doris McCann . the comely the comely cosmetician , marries Karl Anthonissen II . - Wedding bells tinkle for Rose Marie Hinkel , Her prince charming is Howard Prince Williams . - Herbert and Anita Sen- field have an infant daughter , ever since the 5th of September - Every few days you can read in the papers about some poor Mexican being locked up for creating a little disturbance after swallowing a few glisses in the taverns which the town fathers permit to be around to catch their nickels . But do you ever read about a white man being are rested for , shooting a Mexican down in the street ? Every few days you can read about some summer tourist belog fined for having a fish line In his hand and no licens in his pocket . But when some brazen school

board member with malice aforethought willfully and deliberately hurls defiance at the laws of the state of Michigan , sneering at his constitu- ents and refusing to perform the duties of his office , which he well knows and doesn't give a hoot for , do you ever hear of him paying $ 500 fine and serving 90 days in jail as the penalty of the law provides ? No. you never hear of that . Birds like that walk the streets every day with their noses up in the air . Apparently the law doesn't touch them . We wonder why ? So do you wonder . - Another Fair has come and gone . -In the northern part of the county is a school director who doesn't want to hire a teacher . The other two members do , and there are two lady teachers available about three miles away . A father and his little girl went to the treasurer and asked when school was going to begin as it was already a week past time . They were referred to the director . He wasn't home , but his wife reflected his sentiment when she said : " I guess they aren't going to hire a teacher this year . " It's time the mod- erator and the treasurer got together and hired a teacher , even if the director voted no , even if he refused to sign a contract . In another school the director refused to get a teacher and 16 electors of the dis- trict petitioned the board to hire a teacher and keep the school open .

ANDERSON'S GROCERY IN MEARS says : Now while meat is scarce we offer you the consolation of eggs and cheese and things in cans like potted meat and peas . Come here for school supplies , crayons , tablets , mucilage and ink .
