And Dick Wietzke sells the Florence Oil Stove

LITTLE GLIMPSES OF SWIFT LATHERS :

Life In Mears Is Worth Living

IV

I find that life in Mears is worth living because of the sand dunes and the maples and the winds , the strifeless streets , the peace by day and night ; because here I can see the quiet reticence , --the still beauty of the face of Hallie Wheeler ; hecause we can get our mail twice a day at the little tin post office , because the library is open seven days a week , because Elaine Hasty looks like Gertrude Royal , because we have more trains than any town on this line , because Lola Bashaw is always goodnatured next door , because Ed Allen always thinks of something new and clever to say for each new day , because Fred Kreigh is a flow- ing well of good will , because Alice Lambrix is a lit- tle flower with golden curls , because Florence christ-

ian has bobbed her hair , because Brubaker was born brilliant and hides not his wit under a bushel , because Olive Fuller walks by full of energy and life , because Frank Downing sells boards and nails out of which you and I are to build on these ashes the new Mears of tomorrow , because Ed Griswold has a paint brush that wants to work and he will make your house beautiful if you will let him , because of the refined gentleness with which Eva Brubaker walks and talks because Henry Miel sells fish and fish are a good brain food , so there is hope for mears ; becaause Crystal Weldon has nice ways and a voice that s musical and low like the pines , because Harry Fenton mends cars reasonable , because Julia Wright is like the breath of heaven , because two churches raise their spires like a benediction , because of the delicate sensitive beauty of the outline of the face of Pauline Miel , because of the little pond way back among the pine stumps on Seventh street where Clarence Tucker's father used to go walking beside the still waters , because Dortha Genung belongs to The Church Of The Openhearted , because of the village park where green blankets are spread out for those who want to listen to the bird music , because there is hope that Esther Ling will not always be so sober - serious , because there is snap and spar- kle in Emma Sloan's eyes when she stamps her emphatic foot , because Walter Pike of Pike's Peak can send his deep basso warbling down the corridors of a great cathedral , because Joe Muir plays chess with me , because Gertrude Augur has a face that is wistful- ly tender , because margery Carlson is always beaming , because the green hills to the south turn blue in autumn , because far to the north the Crystal hills are always purple , because our street lamps make their little flare on the evening sky and Mears shall not be lost in the night to the airships in their travel ; because no matter how utterly people may discount your motives and fail to understand you , nevertheless always and always you can make friends of the maples , and the birches will listen , and the pines will hear and understand ; because all the books of the world can come to mears , and all the thoughts of the world we can think them here ; because in the freedom of the great open spaces we can think out for ourselves a philosophy of life that satisfies , a personal religion that abides , a soul peace that no man can take away , as we reach out for the serene day when we can sit motion- less on a quiet hill and our thoughts be absorbed in the blue Nirvana of the sky : while all the time subtle , silent relentless is the advance of the yellow desert , and the encroach- ing sands come on forever . Have you faith in Mears to watch and work and wait till the the yellow grains have covered the houses , and then walk on the ecru mountains while the wind ripples waves over your footprints , while the evening wind softly stirs the poplars ? I can see myself here even then , walking among the tree tops over the roofs of the buried city . The western wind shall blow my necktie's flaming red , and I shall be sanguine still ! With my notebook and pencil I can be happy yet even though the townsite is desolate , abandoned , deserted . Perhaps I shall live in a cave in those days . But out of the driftwood washed up by the waves I shall find some boards to build a slab shanty to house my print- ing press . I shall write of woods and water , of dawn and sunset , and Ithe primrose hush that falls on dunes in the twilight afterglow . I shall write of yesterdays and tomorrows . And all these things will I print in my paper . And then if there be no postoffice and no mails I will cast the papers to the winds or put them in bottles and throw them into the sea that they may be washed up on the far Wisconsin shore . So shall I live and feel and write and express myself to the wondering world . From cave to sea , from sea to shack I shall be roaming . Always I shall have the wind to play with , and the seafoam and the gulls to look upon . Then in the great silences I shall think until I solve the mystery of the universe , the mystery of myself . And after the sun goes down I shall have memories .

And I shall think how in the buried city beneath me Bonnie Feasell used to walk down the street in tune with the carol of the birds , I shall remember how Brad Genung sat on the crackerbox , and how Bert Post the tall village prophet had told me that Mears would come to this , I shall remember . Ursula's eager voice , and the glow of the living flesh of Rosebud Christian . So I say , I shall stand at the portal , in the doorway of my cave , af- ter the sun goes down : AND I SHALL HAVE MEMORIES 1

Old Lady Jessup took the school census in the Donaldson district and hired two Carr livery cars to transport the kids to Hart school . Williams complained to the superintendent of public instruction because the kids were so crowded in the livery cars that they had to sit on each other's laps Sothe State Soopdown at Lansing wrote up to Old Lady Jessup to hire another car and therefore mr . Carr bought a large automobile and added it to his fleet . And soon the Williams and Doty families moved out of the district and Old Lady Jessup tried to reduce the transportation contract but mr . Carr said : No , I bought this big car just to satisfy your demands . You will have to pay for three trips all winter . " So mrs . Jessup did as she was told .
